The River at this City Gorged with Ice Coldest Weather for Jlaay Years. Navigation on the Willamette has been suspended for several days on account of the ice. Yes terday morning the large quantities of. floating ice which had been drifting down the river began te accumulate opposite this city, and before noon the river was com pletely gorged from . the Oregon Pacific bridge to a point a half mile above the city. The huge mass of ice kept pack ing in more solidly all dav, caus ing the water in the river to gradu ally rise and back up above the gorge. The ferry-boat, was caught in the ice on the opposite side of the river, and the pressure of the moving mass was so great that the ropes had to be cut to" prevent it from breaking its cable. Several small boats along the river were crushed, and the boat-house of J. (j. Crawford and (tho. I, TilufL-- man was turned upon end on the bank. Tile ice is oiled m several fpor : feet high, and is the worst gore experienced this far up the Wil ; lammette for many years. It is the first time since" 1S7" that the river has been closed over at Al ; hany. During that winter tne j river was frozen over so that it : was almost passable for footmen, ; one man, Levi Backus, having ; crossed over upon the ice by us i ing a hoard. The thermometer has registered j as reported by John Brig.'s, U. S. ; signal service observer, one de I gree above zero for the past three nights. Last evening the weather i was somewhat moderated, and it i began snowing again. THK KL ICK.NKI I 1KKAIK. I presented mv check several- times, but was always told that they were not ready to" set lie at the time. The other dav I went there and was told that Bennett ; had settled up with Brown, the j sub-contractor, and I could get j nothing. That if I wanted mv j money I should have been there that is, I should have gone to his j headquarters at We.-t Kcio and j stayed there for a month or six weeks, in order to be there so 1 j could get my money, instead of Bennett notifying me when he in- tended to make a settlement, or j taking the amount of my check, as ; he might have done, at bn of the various times it was presented to ! him and retaining the amount for ! me: Mr. Bennett is trvinsr to work nn I".P wr mmseii ana at the ! time seems to be standing in ! with the sub-contractors to beat the iarmer arounn tne countrv in every possible way. One ot our leading attorneys! furnishes the following unique record of the work of the supreme court of Georgia : Stevens vs. State, indictment for simple larceny, Bleckley, C. J. 1 . In tlie house, hog bones ; in in the garden, hog hair; hog en trails, hog meat, buried in the earth ; refusal of the occupant of 1 tne premises to permit a search without a legal warrant ; hia ab rupt departure from home while the warrant was being procured ; his flight o retreat to a point more than fifty miles distant; and his continuous absence until arrested and brought back for trial, are strongly suggestive of a suspicious intercourse on his part with some hog or other. The jury were of the opinion that it was the hog describ-' ed in the indictment ; and as he ! was a near neighbor to that hog, ! and as it disapeared about that j time, and its owner went on search ; of it as a stolen hog, and as the j hair and meat found buried in the i garden looked like the h lir and J meat of that hog, it is highly piob- able that the jury were not mis- taken. 2. He testified as if he knew the fact somehow, and if be knew it he could state it. as explanatory of the mode and purpose of the search. He was present at the search, and assisted in conducting it on the owner's behalf. More over the prisoner himself was pres ent, tace to face with the owner, when the investigation began, and when steps were taken to enter upon the search with due legal authority.
