Readers of the Herald are not unfamiliar with the fact that there is a growing demand for Oregon flour aeroafi the Pacific, some ship ments having been made by the Red Crown Mills of this city, and uthe; prominent flouring mills of the state during the past vear. Oregon millers are located directly at ocean jiorts nearest to the land of the Chinese and Japanese.wbich countries are beginning to recog nize superiority of Oregon flour, and find in the markets here their best place to procure breadstuff's. Discussing the question of flour supply on this coast, the Winni- peg Commercial observes that Ore- j gnn millers appear to be making I good ue of the new line of steatn j ers put on by the C. I. R. R. be ! tween Vancouver and China ar.d : Japan. On each trip of these steam ! ers we read of large shipments of flour across the Pacific. Manitoba millers would I ; like to share in tins trade, but this j ; advantage ot the long railway haul j Another feature in favor of the Ore gon millers is that eheao flours are wanted. The expense of shipping c.ieap grades of flour to the coast is of course just as great as for tine grades. Were fine grades of flour most in demand, Manitoba millers would be in a position to compete more successfully with the 1-...,.. .,iir. A Salem Mother Arrested for the Murder of Her Infant Child. ' Special to the HesaldI Salem, Jan. 14, This atternoon a woman named Lizzie B. George. alias Van Pelt, was arrested by j Sheiiff Minto rn a charge of in fanticide. About ten days since she became the mother of a female infant and for several days refused to properly nourish her offspring. Her physician insisted in the mean time that the child should be cared for, but she insisted that she had not the physical means for nourish ment. Last Monday the physician called and found the child missing. The woman said the child had died but her statements were so contra dictory that the physician's suspic ions were aroused and he investi gated the matter. He could not find where the child was buried and several circumstances conspir ed to make the case look very sus picions. As the woman was arrest ed to-day she will be examined on Monday One young man is said to have stated Ihat he knew "'agner, the reputed father of the child, carried the body of the infant from the house on Sunday night; but when questioned about the matter to-day he refused to make any statement.
