The Clark-Pomeroy Sedaction Case Termin ated b7 Marriage. The case brought bv Elva Pom roy, daughter of L. W. Pomerov, of Scio, as prosecuting witness agaiust W: E. Clark, of Jefferson, of seduction, came to an abrupt termination in Justice Humphrey's court last evening, bv the prisoner marrying the girl. .- The defendant was arraigned at 7 o'clock; when his counsel moved for a stay of proceedings, as the parties desired to effect a settle ment. This was granted, and a few minutes later the marriage li cense was issued bv the eountv clerk, and the justice" before whom the case was to be tried performed the marriage ceremony, the same being witnessed by the father and brother of the young lady, as well as the officers of the court. OBITl'AUl. Nothing we have heard for a long time has grieved us so much as the death of Robert Millhollen. On Christmas day at his father's house (Mr. Wm. Millhollen, of Fairview,) this kind and generous hearted boy gave, up the struairle for life. He had been . unwell for some time, but his immediate death was supposed to have been brought about by over exertion in helping to construct a bridge. lie was only twenty-four years of age at the time of his death ; just ready to begin to appreciate life, genial, gay and warm hearted, the clasp of his hand and his good natured greetings win t missed among j ms acquaintances, who all wore a sadder face when they heard he was no more. He was a you nr man who was highly esteemed by all who knew him, "and a favorite among small children. Honest, quiet and sober, he would have succeeded well in any line of bnsi ness that he might have under taken. But, alas ! the gates of the unknown swing open as often to receive the young as the old. and no matter what bright prosi-ects or now much youth we mav have in our favor, none seem to be proof against their noiseless swing. Yet, after all. it may be best just in the happiest, sunniest hour of all the voyage, while eager winds are kissing every sail, to dash against the unseen rock and in an I instant hear the billows roar around a sunken ship: for whether ! in mid sea or among the breakers ot the further shore, a wreck must mark at last the end of each and all. He sleeps in the Oakville church yard, sheltered from the winds by woods of fir and pine, in sound of running water. The church stands near by among the oaks, the shadows of which rested upon him when he drew his first bffath. Will the birds hop less gaily through their branches now since the winter rains fall lightlv on a new made grave? He will rest well. . B. M. Albany. Dec. 31. 1SS7. MIDDLE i:iim;e hem. THE MORNING HERALD : THURSDAY, JANUAR" THE OKEGOS PACT FIC. Confidence That Hunt Will Resume Work fhe Yaqnina's Freight- The Ore gonian on the 0. P. Prominent officials of the Oregon Pacific, when approached on the subject of the difficulty between their company and contractors Hunt aud Bennet. express them selves as of the opinion that o.ne"of them Iluut -will resume oper ations. Whether or not an under andiug nas been arrived at betwei n mem and Mr. Hunt they -decline to state, but it is very evident that an early settlement of the trouble, it not already consummated, is con fidently expected by them.- Mr. Bennett's suit tor over a half a million dollars they regard as a very large-sizal bluff, and they re giving themselves uo uneasiness about its outcome. Appearances now are that work will he resumed along the Oregon Pacific extension in the spring ju: as if nothing had happened. George Pope, agent for Lloyds, who has charge of the adjustment of general averages on wrecked ves sels, passed down the roa i yester day alternoon, savs Thursdays Statesman, on his way from Ya quina. It is not yet ascertainable what per cent, of the value of the cargo had bton lost, and ti e aver age will n.it be declared until Mr. Pope and the insurance adjusters settle on the matter in Portland. Average bonds have been sent to various shippers on the wrecked Yaqnina. whose freight was saved. Iu these bonds the shippers agree to pay their share f the general average, upon receipt of their freight, or after the amount of the average is ascertained. Among other things, the New Year's Oregoniari says of the Ore gon Pacific: "The ' com nlt-tinn of the lin'c connecting Portland with the Willamette vallev narrowguage system is m important step in local development; hut a step far moie important is the enterprise now in progress hy the Oregon Pacific railroad company. This company, whose road at the begin ning of iHr-t year entered Albany in its march " from Yaqnina bav acn.ss the state, has made a fur ther advance of twenty mill s. wiil he across the Cascade mountains and into the middle of the state by liie earlv summer. The progress of this road is carrying transport ation into the heart , of Oregon, a country as yet but little more than explored, but destined to make great advances under its new op portunities 'The Oregon Pacific road is said t be under engagement with the Chicago & Northwestern to meet it in Southern Idaho. There is little doubt here that the Oregon Pacific is but another name for Chicago & Northwestern and that it intends to make a through line between Chicago and Portland via Idaho, central Otegon, the SaoMain pass and the lower Willamette val ley.. The route has been chosen with consummate wisdom over the only practicable pass in the mid dle part of the state and through a region of vast resourses as yet but little developed.
