'¿(K United States Consul General Ma son, at Berlin, has sent to the State Department an exhaustive treaties on the potato as a source of wealth in Germany. As one of the most usual methods of convert ing the potato into wealth is by dis tilling its content of alcohol, Mr. Mason is liable io get into con flict with the W. C. T. U. by dis coursing ou this under-ground sub ject. In New York city alone the enor mous sum of #7,215,000 is being in vested in church buildings now in process of construction, The larg est amount expended by a single denomination is being spent by the Catholics who have outstanding contracts for upwards of $2,000,000. Christian Science stands next with contracts amounting to $750,000. Scientists have discovered in Mississippi, a family of pure negroes to which is bom, at frequent inter vals, perfectly white children, theve offsprings being negroes in every thing but color. So far as the rec ords have been perfected, these al binos occur frequently in the alter nate generations. From all accounts Judge Parker of New York, who is talked of as democratic presidential candidate is a high grade man. Incidentally there is a suspicion that Judge Par ker is being “ boomed” at this time with a view to tiring out the people and m iV n gh U candidacy an ira- p 'sdbility. Seattle Car Strike Ends* Seattle, April 1.—The street-car strike is settled. The strikers de cided j ester Jay afternoon to go back to work by practically a unani mous vote. About 25 of the GOO men in Eagles’ Hall, where the clos ing scone was enacted, w-ere sulky and held otit, but they were so over whelming in the minority that President McCoy said at first that the vote to go back to work was unanimous. Later he discovered this littlo bunch of men who bad not had enough of the strike, so lie put the other side of the question, to give them a chance to vote. Official Counly Court Proceedings. Tho Commoner proposes to carri on a campaign of education and or ganization to the end that Demo cratic principles may triumph. In addition to tho editorial de partment, which receives Mr. Bry an’s personal attention, The Com moner contains a Current Topic de partment, wherein a non-partisan discussion of topics of timely inter est and other valuable information will be found. The Home Depart ment is conducted by an experienced woman who is widely known as a writer of household topics and who is nn authority on tho art of cooking in all that the term implies. This department alone is worth tho sub seriptien price. The other depui t- ments of the paper aro all interest ing and ably conducted, among which is a summary of the world's news told in narrative style, and Mr Maupin’s department— Whether Common or Not—contains original anecdoter and wit, moral lessons in homely phrase and verse, and appeals to old and young alike. The Commoner as a whole is clean, entertaining and instructive, and its rapid increase in circulation now amounting to 140,000 -is proof of tfco paper’s strength and influence.
