LEVI STRAUSS& CO s OVERALLS Coquille Utly • Celabration. The Ulorious day o f our national independence wus duly ohsi i v»-d I y a celebration previously hi r a c e d by a ooinmittee of patriotic citizens who were equal to the emergency and presented a program iu real modern American style. With thi exception o f a little Oregon mist in the early part of tho day, all went off iD first-olass style. This interfered somewhat with the parade, but gave tbe boys with the tiro-crackers greater liberty without endangering property. It is estimated that there were 1200 people present, aud there would evidently have been more had it not been for the threatening appeareuce of the weather. At sunrise the work of fireiug tbe salute of thirteen guns com menced, and everything about towu showed signs of life after this, while guns and crackers kept up such din that no one could for get that it was the glorious 4th. About 10 a. in. the processions formed ou Front street, marching to the grove where all necessary nrrangemeuts had beeu made for the forenoon exercises. The ora tion of the day was delivered by Hon. Walter Siuclair and was a patriotic rehearsal of national his tory that carried one back, iu mind, to colnuial days aud time c f tbe berth of our grand country. The music was furnished by the Coquille Band and bad its effect in keeping up the order and en thusiasm. Key. E. L. Fitch opened the exercises with prayer which was followed by a song by the choir. Miss Grace Skeels reading the Declaration of Independence in a patriotic manner, followed by tbe oration and national sirs by the band. A sumptous basket dinner was then spread by tbe people in con nection with bountiful supply of bread, coffee nnd baked clams pre pared by tbe committee. After dinner the afternoon exer cise were taken up on or near Front street aDd carried nut iu the following manner: 30 yards footrace for girls under 10 years, purse $2 00. MiuLie Wright first, Louisa Willard sec ond. 100 yards footrace for men over CO years, purse $1 00. C. H. But ler, first, C. A. Stiue second. 50 yards footrace for liQys under 12 years, purse $2 00. Clin ton. 50 yards footrace for boys uoder 16 years of agp, purse $250. W. N. Carl, first, Geo. Wilson second. Sack race, 50 yards, purse $2 00 resulted iu a tie between Ed Lor enz aud J. Purdoe. Tbe three legged race also re sulted iu a tie, for a purse of $200 in both cases the purse wasdevided. The greased pole was climed by several boys aud the six priz's taken off without difficulty. Tho track pole prize or $10 was taken off by M. E. Lamray. The greased pole walking over the river was quite interesting, though particepated iD by but two parties, Arthur McDuflee walking off w ith the prize of $500. Little Jake Barger got away with the Iran eatiug contest, gettiug $1 00 for his dry fun. The horse race created some ex citement. There were six horses entered for a quarter of a mile dash and Tom Meld’s buckskin came out about 4 feet ahead with John Curreu’s Billy second. The log-rolling contest wns a lively scene. Three men, well qualified tor the business entered, nnd while it did not last long, it was exceedingly exciting. D. A. Wright proved the best rider, not falling off at all nnd taking a prize of $15, while Jesse Hall took sec ond prize—$5. for bis plung bath. Tbo band boys gave a ball at night which lasted till broad day light in the morning which afforded much nmusomput for the lovers of the light fantistic. 01 EL COQUILLEfe JO H 2ST “ I h a v e n - »<1 y o u r v a l u a b l e C A M 'A * R E T D and U ni them p erfect.
