The steamer Townsend, which had been some few months since condemned and discarded, but later bought and put through a course o f repairs and improvements for the Coquille river-San Fiancisoo trade, is reported to have sunk a few days ago near the Alaskan coast. Particulars of the disaster are yet wanting. H . P. Dnffy, o f the match fac tory, received a quantity of de layed chemicals by Monday’s train, and will now be enabled to make up for some lost time. There is only one boat running to the bay that dare carry the material, and the shipping parties were long find ing out the fact. It is all right now, however. “ A young man came into our store yesterday suffering from a se vere attack of cramp colic,” writes B. F. Collins, the dapper bar-tender, who worked at the Hotel Oregon a few weeks past, and whose exploits in tho line of kiting checks and floating worth less drafts was ventilated iu the Tid ings of recent date, is still working along the same line. The latest vic tim of his is in Marshfield. On the 15th inst. Collins drew a draft in favor of John Curren, on the bank of Ashland, for $50, which was cashed by a banking firm in the Coos metropolis. It reached Ash land Saturday and was promptly posted and returned to Marshfield and when it reaches there Mr. Cur ren will no doubt have the amount to repay the bank for Lis faith in Collins’ financial worth. It devel ops that Collins is not the erstwhile Ashland bar-tender’s proper name, he being the son of a prominent citizen of AYllliamsport, Vronrerl vania, named Codder, from whom he a few years since inherited $17,- 000, which has been dissipated. When he came to the coast, for rea sons best known to himself, Codder discharged Iris patrouyinic and es sayed to be known as Harry C. Col ling, which signature attaches to checks and drafts he is turning into coin quite rapidly if his recent experiences in Hornbrook, Medford, Grants Pass and Marshfield are to be taken as a criterion. In all prob ability ere this Collins has made his way from Coos county to California. Business Our friend and fellow-citizen, J. B. Fox, makes a just complamt to us regarding the transactions of a Sau Francisco commission houfcn, J. H. Cain & Co., whom we favor ably mentioned some time since, for what appears to be very uufair and crooked dealings. For the fact that we innocently and honestly were glad that our farmeis aud or- chaidists had found an luuest and reliable commission house in Sau- Francisco, we voluntarily recom mended it, and now we just as sin cerely and iu duty bound make amends by publishing a statement of tbis very unjust, unfair, unbusi n esslik e transaction. Ou tLe 19th o f December tbe firm credits from Mr. Fox tbe re ceipt of 10 boxes of apples; Janu ary 2d be was similarly credited with 58 boxes more, which Mr. Fox tells us were Baldwins, carefully picked and packed for him by no experienced California Iruit packer at 8c por box. YVe nndei stand the boxes were worth 10 ceuts each; tbe packing o f most of them cost 8 cents per box; a few of the apples Mr. Fox bought to make out bis shipment at 35 cents per box. Now, tbe st itemeut of sales for account of J. B. Fox, by J. H . Cain & Co., is before us, dated San Francisco, January 23, 1900, aud is as follows: For four c«nt* i*i utiunpa to pn j pont age. we will send you «titeen medical books. Cir. Mgr.
