Business
Our friend and fellow-citizen,
J. B. Fox, makes a just complamt
to us regarding the transactions of
a Sau Francisco commission houfcn,
J. H. Cain & Co., whom we favor
ably mentioned some time since,
for what appears to be very uufair
and crooked dealings.
For the
fact that we innocently and honestly
were glad that our farmeis aud or-
chaidists had found an luuest and
reliable commission house in Sau-
Francisco, we voluntarily recom
mended it, and now we just as sin
cerely and iu duty bound make
amends by publishing a statement
of tbis very unjust, unfair, unbusi
n esslik e transaction.
Ou tLe 19th o f December tbe
firm credits from Mr. Fox tbe re
ceipt of 10 boxes of apples; Janu
ary 2d be was similarly credited
with 58 boxes more, which Mr. Fox
tells us were Baldwins, carefully
picked and packed for him by no
experienced California Iruit packer
at 8c por box.
YVe nndei stand
the boxes were worth 10 ceuts
each; tbe packing o f most of them
cost 8 cents per box; a few of the
apples Mr. Fox bought to make
out bis shipment at 35 cents per
box. Now, tbe st itemeut of sales
for account of J. B. Fox, by J. H .
Cain & Co., is before us, dated San
Francisco, January 23, 1900, aud
is as follows:
