A call was made last Tuesday, by posters at Several points through town, for volunteer help to clean off the courthouse block, to begin Wednesday at noou, nnd yet nt 7 a. in. Wednesday a dozen or more men were piesent with axes, picks, shovels aud cant-hooks; a little later they were reinforced by 30 or 40 more, of all ages, from gray- baiied veterans to youth of school age, aud the firs and stumps and logs soon disappeared. In tho afternoon as high as 05 poisons were working at one time, some putting iu n full day nt it. By night fires were blazing nt many points, aud the slashings throw-out in the later darkness the warmth and good cheer of bonfires at a jollification. Tho scene was vastly different from what it had been for so long, when it lay in its native wildness, clotted with brambles and evergreens— myrtles, firs, hemlocks, etc.— with a few upturned roots of the gmul growths of former years, nud the great-trunks prone and decaying, now piled up aud con sumed with fire. This was a gift o f our good citizens to tho people of the couuty, iu appreciation of their good will wheu the question came up to relocate the county seat. The patriotism, sense of justice and independence of the masses of the peoplo can always be relied on and a reflex will not be wanting in response thereto from the good people of this com munity. The douatiou of a most desiiable site in tho heart of the town by oue person, a Id ick 300x 200 feet, with wide and well defined streets on all sides, w r s munificent and creditable to a degree; then the public gives, relit free, for one or two years, suitable buildings for the court and officers, vault for si fety of records, etc., an I now this little additional gratuity will go to assure the people that their confidence bus not been misplaced.
