This country would have been English colonies still if its people had said all along: “ Wo can’t cope with so great a power.” The colonists in 1770 did not say: “ We can’t;” but “ We can;” and they did. In 1812, when Great Britain ngain became intolerant and over bearing, the United States, though then comparatively weak, didn’t sny: “ We can’t protect nnd defend our seamen and our rights and liber ties.” They said: “ We can.” And they declared war against England, nnd whipped her ngain. Years later, when the government was called upon to defend the terri tory of Oregon, against the aggres sion of tho British lion, statesmen did not sny: “ We might ns well give it up.” They snid: “ Hero is our ultimatum: Fifty-four, forty or fight.” And they meant it. Yet now, with a nation of 70,000- 000 people and an unimaginable wealth of resources, there are peo- plo who say we can’t regulate our finnnces and set up our own stand ards of money without consulting Great Britain, nnd even yielding to her on all points. The money contest is really in effect, a contest between the people of this country and England. The “ tories” in our midst say; “ We can’t.” Tho Amcricnn peoplo will sny: “ Wo can.”— Portlnnd Sun. A Republican correspondent of the Capital Journal, n Repulican journal, writes from Aumsville nnd rejoices among other things that the g. o. p. has actually swallowed the crank, anarchistic doctrines of the Populist party and the latter will hnve to seek new principles. He says: '•The Populists are in a bad way. They have been robbed on nil sides. The Republicans now preach free silver 10 to 1, plenty of greenbacks, no interest paying bonds, nnd the payment of the government obliga tions in silver. This lias been Pop ulistic doctrine, but is now captured by the Republicans, nnd the Popu lists will be compelled to take another step in advance.” In accordance with resolution adopted by the Colorado legisla ture, Senators Fulton, Armstrong nnd Kennedy wore appointed a com mittee to investigate the blacklist ing, by railroads, of strikers. ------------- - *$> »■—--------- “ Perhaps you would not think so, but a very large proportion of dis eases in New York come from care lessness about catching cold,” says Dr. Syrus Edson. “It is such n simple thing nnd so common that very few people, unless it is a case of pneumonia, pay any attention to a cold. New York is one of the healthiest places on the Atlantic coast nnd yet there are a great many cases of catarrh and consump tion which have their origin in this neglect of the simplest precaution of every day life. The most sensi ble advice is, when you hnve one get rid of it ns soon as possible. By nil means do not neglect it.” Dr. Edson does not toll y ou , how to cure a cold, but we will. Take Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy. It will relieve the lungs, aid expector ation, open the secretions and soon effect a permanent cure. 50 cent bottles for sale by 8. L. Leneve, druggist. | West Oregonian | A m I |>HI, ih 1 c «1 .F ir e s . Fires are pretty frequent, two having taken place in this city last week, resulting, however, in small loss so far. Last Thursday after- nooo, about 3 o'clock, a house next to our public school building, occu pied by Mr. Petersou’s family and belonging to Duucau Crquhait of Riverton, took tire on the roof from a protruding stovepipe. The alarm brought a prompt response from John Fouts, Zenie Btraug, Tom Walker, D. P. Strung, sr., and a few others, and a good work was done. The tire was subdued with but little damage rcsultiug. Miss Petersou, who has been so ill lately, was atfected with a ner vous attack, but soon recovered. EARLY FHIDAY MORNING The residence of Prof. Frank Bauch, near R. D. Sanford’s, sent up a great column o f smoke, but in a brief spell the tire was extin guished. This also caught on the roof from a defective pipe, and owing to its isolation in the ex treme northern suburbs, the scar city o f help aud water, the house was threatened with destruction. The nearest neighbors, however, and citizens who observed the prob able danger, reached the spot and worked heroically, thus saving from much damage. Water iu barrels, caught by Mr. Bunch from ths last rain, was convenient and the means o f saving the home. The damage was hardly over $10. SERIOUS FIRE AT RIVERTON. About 5 p. m. Friday the com fortable home of Stacy Leo, at Riv erton, caught fire and was wholly consumed, together with its con tents of furniture, clothing, etc., except a trunk and two chairs. We learn that the fire occurred while Mrs. Lee had run a moment to u neighbor’s, after building a fire to get supper. Mr. Lee was working at Price Bro’s mill. Mr. Lee’s loss is heavy— all he had— about $1500, and without insurance. It was n comfortable home, recently fiuislied nnd well furnished. ——-------- — • 1 — ■ ■ 8. A. Ward, formerly a resident here, lately moved to Port Kenyon, Humboldt county, California, and writes us o f date March 8th: “ We had a pleasant trip on the steamer Bnudoritle. * * We lauded at Triuidad about 11 a. m. Saturday, took the stage to Areata, where we arrived at 5 p. m., took the cars and reached home Sunday. I found ull well, but times nre dull. The creameries nre most all started, but nre running light, as milk is short as yet. The steamer Weeott has been taking on lumber to make out a load. * * I never saw so many butter boxes as there are piled up here. I saw some of the Arngo boxes. I hardly think they came here filled. I saw B’ red Chleraens. He is on the Weeott; he seems to be giving satisfaction. W. W. Goble and family are well nud increasing, a baby girl having arrived. I understand Katie is to be married soon. Robert Pridgen, formerly of Coquille, is here. He met with an accident a few months ago. He bad his knee-cap broke, and will be always a little crippled. I don't know just bow soon I will be up. Our publio school begins a 9-months’ term next Monday, 11th. I hnve seen several parties here that talk o f coming up to see the Coquille this spring, ns soon as the roads get dry.” Xttllrr. U s?
