W a d e ’ s V ote .— T hroughout the whole progress o f the impeachment trial, says the W . W . Statesman Ben. W ade steadily refused* to vote, the rea- ebn beiug that it would look unseem* ingly to vote iu a case where he was a party interested. It was intimated, however, that if on the final vote it would be necessary to secure a con viction, then he (Ben. W ade) would resign, and cast his vote in favor of" impeachment. When the trying mo ment came he failed to re.-ign, but he did cast the vote, which if successful would have placed him in the Presi dential chair. This is too much even for radicalism, and accordingly we find the N. Y . Post, a leading republican organ, denouncing the tendency. It aays: ** From the origin o f trial by jury, from the very beginnings o f our com. mon law, it has been the inalienable right o f an accused person to be tried before judges and jurors who can have no interest in the result. There is not in history an instance o f a judge so lost to decency as to sit aud act upon a trial, on the result o f which his own highest ambition directly depended. This is the settled and essential law of every judicial proceeding; the law which was mit expressed in the Con Ktitution only because its authors did not conceive o f the possibility o f its violation by a public man ; the law which is clearly implied by that instru ment in forbidding the possible sue cessory of the President eveD to sit in the chair o f the Senate while delibera ting on impeachment. This law Ben jamin F. \\ ade has defied and broLen. He already has his appropriate reward in the failure of his disgraceful attempt, and will doubth ss be made by the peo ple a negative example to all American statesmen for the future." , G r a n t in I l l i n o i s .— W .
