Ream«* and Plymale returned during the week with their families from quite a lengthy stay out at Dead Indian and Buck Lake. .They re port having experienced a very agreeable and delightful sojourn at this popular retreat, and pass muny high encomiums upon the place as a summer’s rendezvous. Three bears and a number of deer were dispatched. Ex-Sberiil Kearnes, however, came very near being cap tured himself by one of the bears, which hap pened about as follows : Being out one morn ing before breakfast, be espied two young bruins rapidly making their way up a tree. He very naturally inferred that they were performing for his benefit and proceeded to bag them at once. A single shot from his Henry and a terific squall from the cub brought to the scene of operations the mother of the cub«, who had been reconnoitering what was going on from a distance of about forty yards. Luckily, Mr. Roames managed with admirable coolness to give her the bene fit of too discharges from the Henry in a vital place from the effects of which she fell close to his feet. The tirsfslmt struck her in the shoulder without retarding her progress a particle, the second, right in the sticking place, done the work, however. REAL ESTATE DEALER. Special Collector of Claims. For sale by K illed by a B ear .—A young lad, aged about 16 years and of French parentage, by the name of Parsean, started out in company with another individual over on Dry Creek one day last week with his gun to hunt up some sheep that he had been herding. They separated and one took one side of a deep canyon aDd the other the other. They kept in hailing distance, but after awhile the boy's calls ceased to bo heard. That night he failed to get home. It was thought he had gone over to the other ranch, and no great uneasiness was felt for him until utter the next day. Search was then made and resulted in finding his lifeless body down in the can yon, horibly mutilated and bitten evidently by a bear or some other ferocious animal. He was buried iu the cemetery on Sunday. T hat W histle .—For a number of mornings our townfulks have been accustomed to hear a steam whistle out iu the valley in the direc tion of Humboldt Bend. Some may have thought it the noise of a steamboat or a rail road locomotive ; but it is our duty to dispel any such delusion if it exists. The aforesaid musical accompaniment is attached to a saw mill,.lately put under wray in the grove three juihs east of town. ------------ -------------- S ummer D iggings .—A number of miners off Jackson creek have been putting in the dry months of the season up on Elliot creek, near the summit of the Siskiyou range. Mr. Al. Sturgis, Jesse Titus and others have been for a long time engaged opeuiDg a placer claim, and we are glad to learn that their perseverance is in a good way to be crowned with success. They are working the old channel to the gulch that was fed by the rich quartz lode formerly worked by Fowler & Co. Out of a very small strip of ground, we are informed, they obtained the nice little opening prospect of $1,200. This they consider, however, oDly a beginning. When a supply of water is again vouchsafed them up that way, we expect to hear of additional good and satisfactory re cults.
