Democratic State Convention
Pursuant to notice, the Democratic Convention
for Jackson county, convened in the Court House
at this place, Saturday, February 12th, at 2 o’clock,
p. in.

On motion of J. D. Fay, W. F. Songer was
elected Temporary Chairman, and T. H. B. Ship-
ley Temporary Secretary.
On motion of W. W. Fiddler, the Chair appoint­
ed the following Committee on Credentials : J. D.
Fay, E. D. Foudray. and Kasper Kubli.
By virtue of the action of the Democratic
State Convention, which was held at Port
land, on Thursday, March 19th, 1868, and of
the Democratic State Central Committee,

State News.
[Ensign, February 12th.]
On Monday of this week, a man named McPher­
son was lodged in jail. It appears that he was
arrested and examined before a Justice of the
Peace at Canyonville, upon the charge of assault
with a dangerous weapon, and was bound over for
his appearance at the Circuit Court, his bail fixed
at three hundred dollars. He made his escape
from the constable who had him in charge, and
was supposed to be on his way to Coos Bay when
he was arrested at Weekly’s place, by Deputy
Sheriff Kent. In default of bail he is placed in
confinement. Bad whisky was at the bottom of
his difficulties.
From Prof. Deardorff, who paid our town a visit
this week, we learn that the Umpqua Academy is
in a very prosperous condition. The third quarter
will commence on Monday next. In consequence
of tho illness of members of the Faculty the ser­
vices of Miss Alice Kent have been secured, as
teacher of the Primary Department fur the coming
quarter. The graduating class will be larger than
usual at the close of this year. This Academy is
one of the most successful as well as one of the
best institutions of its grade in the State.

Some of our prominent citizens, says the Oregon­
ian, who have been taking an active interest in the
West side railroad, have received news from Wash­
ington that important measures in aid of the enter­
prise arc now pending in Congress, and will doubt­
less be passed by that body. We trust this news
will be confirmed, and from nil advices of late, we
have every reason to believe that it will be.
A gentleman who has tried it, informs us that
tho best plan for keeping hens free from vermin,
during incubation, is to place old newspapers in
the bottom of the nests. Straw or other soft ma-
terail* may be used for a lining.
