Volume XXIV 3ANDON, about Thursday of next week. The freight cargo was as olli w -.; 250,000 feet of lumber, 1905 ca > s of salmon, 500 boxes of apples and ten tons of merchandise. Among the passengers were ti e following: F. L. Simpson, J. I.. Kronenburg, Mrs. Sneed, Mav Deepest Water in History Sneed, Mr. Lawrence, R. A. Bates, R . L. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Washen, of Coquille River L. II. Perkins and wife, Mrs. Haight, M ss Ciarbour, Mrs. Ohman, Mr Harbor Balch, Mrs. Wilson, M. L. Payne, Mrs. Button. TWENIY-TWO FEET Of WATER ON BAR GOOD RESULTS OBTAINED FROM JETTY ------ OOT'------ Bank President Eight or Ten Years As a result of the woik already done on the pile jetty, the waler on the bar at the mouth of the Coquille river has so materially increased that on Monday when the Triumph went out to sound before towing out tilt Elizabeth, it was found that there was twenty-two feet of water on the bar, and the depth continued for fifty feet inside the government jetty. This is the most water that has been on the bar in eighteen years, or since navigation of this river was undertaken, 1 he good results of the pile jetty are thus already apparent, and it is hoped that the little differences which have resulted in a temporary closing down of the work will soon be adjusted and the work continued. With the-jetty only extending out a few hundred feet, and with twenty- two feet of water on the bar, it is easy to believe that with the com pletion of the jetty there will be at least thirty feet of water at high tide which would be sufficient to let in most any kind of an ocean going steamer, and the claim of Bandon people that we have the best harbor between San Francisco and the Co lumbia river will be tinore than ever verified. ------ OvO------ Notice of Sale of Stock. Notice is hereby given that where as on the 2d day of July 1908 the Bandon Farmers Merchants Tel ephone Company levied an assess ment upon all subscribed shares of the stock of said corporation, of $6 per share, and whereas the by laws of said corporation provide that after 60 days stock shall be sold for de linquent assessments; and whereas said assessments have not been paid upon the following shares owned by the following named persons: Bandon Commercial Co, two shares; R. H. Rosa, two shares; Robert Fredrick Jr., one share; James Adams, one share. Therefore said shares will be sold to the highest bidder for cash, at the City Hall, Bandon, Oregon, at r 130 p. m. Saturday December 12th, 1908. By order of Board of directors, made Nov. 2, 1908. I). H. J ackson , Secretary. Single Men Winners The first installment of the nine game series at the Are Light Bowl ing Alleys between the married men and single men was played Friday night, and tne single men won three straight games with a good safe margin, and to win the series will only be compelled to win two more, while the benedicts have live games to win. The next scries will be played this evening and Ixrth teams are going in with a determination of winning. La Junta, Colo, Nov. 7—John E Godding, president of the defunct bank of Rocky Ford, was today sentenced to not less than eight nor more than ten years in the state penitentiary, for ¡eceiving deposits after he knew the bank was insol vent. The bank failed last spring for a half million dollars. At his re cent ttial it was proven that he prac tically stole a quarter of a million dollars whiceh he used in his enter prises. Falls From High Perch New York, Nov, 7—Creeping along a narrow stone coping while the Hames darted about him in an effort to escape from his burning home Arthur C. Keating, a retired clothing merchant of Brooklyn, to day plunged to the street below, re ceiving injuries from w-hich he later died. His wife and son and two daugh ters watched him breathlessly from the sidewalk as he moved along the perilous path and fell. Had Keat ing not gone back into the house to secure valuable papers he would have escaped death. ------ OOO------- Special Lobbyist in Congress Some time ago the Recorder ad vocated the idea of sending some one to Washington, D. C. to inter cede with the liver .and Harbor com mittee of Congress for further ap propriations for the Coquille river and Coos Bay. At that time we menti ned the name of Orville Dodge, the editor of the Coquille Sentinel, as he has been there be fore and understands the situation, In personal conversation with Mr. Dodge we learn that he is willing to go, but that his expenses, which would be something in the neigh borhood of $400 would have to be borne. Why would it not be a good idea for the Bandon Chamber of Commerce to take up the matter and send a couple of men to solicit the fanners along the river and the up river towns, as all would be benefitted. If the river were dredg ed so that steamers could run to the up river towns, there would be a great saving in freight rates, and this would be a wonderful benefit fo the entire valley. The River and Harbors Congress meets early in Dec. and Mr. Dodge has a personal invitation from the chairman of the committee to attend their meeting. Why not get busy and send him? Coos Bay people would do well to take up this proposition too as Mr. Dodge is fair in his dealings and will work just as hard for Coos Bay as he will for the Coquille river. -------ODO------- Wall Paper Elizabeth Sailed Monday The Elizabeth sailed for San Francisco Monday with a large car go of freight anil a big list of pas sengers.
