Wimaipeg, Aug if—A PulInaM coach of a transcontinental Canadian Pacific express train, which arrived from the West today, had all its windows broken by missiles thrown between Brandon and Broadview. A rail was removed from the track on the Winnipeg Beach line last night just as an excursion train was going out. A disaster was averted by trackmen who discovered the KaP- A quarter of a million dollars was paid today to the Canadian Pacific Railway strikers by Postmaster McPherson. Over 2000 men were in line at the Merchants Bank. With the amounts paid out at other points in the West the sum dis tributed was nearly $ 1,000,000. It is authoritatively stated that no strike benefits will be paid before Aug. 26th. At Medicine Hat 16 strikebreakers from the Santa Fe Railway were brought in today. The Chinese proprietors have refused to sell meals to these men. A meeting has taken place be tween the committee representing all the shop employes on the Canadian Northern system and the management of the line regaiding an alleged violation of the agree ment entered into May 1st last. Unless some amicable agreement is reached during the course of the next few days there may be serious trouble. About 80 mechanics are involved. There are mauy imitations of De witt’« Carpolized Witch Hazel Salve but just oue original. Nothing else is just as good. Insist on De Witt’s It is cleansing, cooling and sootblug. OVER THIRTY-FIVE YEARS Harriman and the Governor The people of Oregon grasp al every straw. The slightest incident or expression indicative of possible railroad building spells hope to them. Hence they feel encouraged over Mr. Harriman’s action in send ing for Governor Chamberlain, General Manager O’Brien and Mr. Stanley, to visit him al Pelican bay, The people hope this is significant that there is an intention on the great railroad king’s part to have "something doing" in Oregon be fore long. We must be prepared lor dis appointment—but we are, for we are used to it. But it is right to hope, It seems reasonable to sup- pose that the invitation to the Governor is especially significant. Mr. Harriman knows the Governor’s attitude, has heard him publicly ex press his opinions, < as to what should be done, what Mr. Harri- man's duty to Oregon I is; and he knows very well that it would be in vain to attempt to change that attitude and opinion—nor is it likely that Mr. Harriman has any idea of doing so. Whatever the object, Oregon could send no better envoy to Mr. Harriman. The governor will be entirely firm in his position as to Mr. Harriman's duty as a great quasi-public servant, but his manner of treating the subject will not of fend the magnate. The two men will be well met; may much good result from the conference. —Journal. The Independent Farmer With wheat at 8o cents a bushel, hard times cannot even peek over the rim of Umatilla county. His crop may be ten or fifteen bushels short of the usual average, but the farmer Is not complaining, He will have a jingle in his |>ockets and a corpulent account at the bank, Truly he is the "salt of the earth Once and the fatness thereof.” it was the fashion to sympathize with him as he arose at 4 o’clock in the morning to pail his cow and do the chores, his faded blue denim overalls kept in doubtful juxtaposition with his galluses by a few shingle nails. Nov he is the object of admiration and respect— not to say envy. In Umatilla county there are scores of farmers individually able to buy out any of its merchants and have a comfort able surplus left for emergenicies. Lawyers, doctors, bankers and tradesman must dofi their' hah sons of to the horny-handed the soil—who may sport automo biles if they choose, aMd take their leisure as becomes men who hare "arrived.” • • In 1872 them was a great deal of diarrhoea, dyueutery and cholera in fantum. It wan at this time that Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera a.id Diarrhoea Remedy was first brought into use. It proved more successful than any other remedy or treatment, and has for thirty live years main tamed that record. From a small begiuning its sale and nse lias ei tended over every part of tbe United States and to many foreigu countries Nine druggists out of teu will recom mend it when their opinion is asked, although they have other mediciues that may pay them a greater profit. It can always be depended upon, even in tbe most severe aud danger ous cases. For sale by C. Y. Lowe. IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE «TATE OF OREGON, IN AND FOR COO« OOUNTY. J.W.
