While it is pleasing to know that valuable timber is not being destroyed, yet there are two reasons why this explanation does not entirely remove the de plorable features of the situation. In the first place there is great danger that the hre*will spread, as it has done in some instances, to merchantable timber. In the second place, the fires kill the young trees which have sprung up and which would eventually reforest the hills. The laws of this state require that th* rubbish of lumber camps I m - burned at a season of the year when there is no danger of the fire spread ing. They require that the rub bish be burned after each season of slashing, ami if this were done there Would be no fuel to feed a future fire after a growth of young trees had started. Burning the rubbish at the proper season would not only remove the danger of disas trous fires but would relieve the state from that pall of smoke which obscures the view at a time when Oregon should be mo£t beautiful. The forest fire law should be more vigorously enforced.—< >regonian. o Here is News about Oregon That public sentiment is under- going a radical change on the ques- tion of controlling the liquor traffic is shown by the acts of Leg is lature in a number of states within the past few nnvnths restricting the traffic.
