Enforce the Forest Fire Law
Many of the reports from the dis
tricts in which forest tires are raging
convey the information that the
damage is slight for the reason that
the fire is burning only the brush
and refuse where the timber has
been removed. While it is pleasing
to know that valuable timber is
not being destroyed, yet there are
two reasons why this explanation
does not entirely remove the de
plorable features of the situation.
In the first place there is great
danger that the hre*will spread, as
it has done in some instances, to
merchantable timber. In the second
place, the fires kill
the young
trees which have sprung up and
which would eventually reforest the
hills.
The laws of this state require that
th* rubbish of lumber camps I m -
burned at a season of the year when
there is no danger of the fire spread
ing. They require that the rub
bish be burned after each season of
slashing, ami if this were done there
Would be no fuel to feed a future
fire after a growth of young trees
had started.
Burning the rubbish
at the proper season would not
only remove the danger of disas
trous fires but would relieve the
state from that pall of smoke which
obscures the view at a time when
Oregon should be mo£t beautiful.
The forest fire law should be more
vigorously enforced.—< >regonian.
