J FEBRUARY 27. 1908 ■■■Mf.w-.L < O111 townsman, Robert Bedillion, being the recipient of a pointer from the Coos Bay Tinies of recent date • 0 respecting a sudden big demand for cotton blankets in the Uhibese Em pire, has ordered a map of the orient sufficiently large to be a shroud for his own massive self, adorn the walls of the en mills where Robert can conven iently study the superior or inferior market advantages of the Province of Shantung as against the Provinces of Tsin-Tsen or Chee Foo. It is barely probable, he thinks, that his friend Price, of thejocal shipyard, can put. some good hints into his noodle as to which of the ¡»rovinces is the most advisable for the export ing of his cotton blanket product, though friend Price, to be sure, re signed his missionary work then- many years ago. However, Mr .Bedillion wishes to thank the Times for having so kindly opened the ori ental door to his increasing trade. He mav now l>t- expected T he Oregon Weekly, which is thv State University publication camt to our desk this week with a verj appropriate color design in yellow showing the. condition of that insti tution in comparison to that of out •iater States of Idaho and Washing ton in a cartoon. Oregon was rep resented by a lady crippled and maimed by reason of the referen dum, while Washington and Ida ho were represented by ladies well clad and physically perfect. Their people supported their schools of higher learning while Oregon is hav ing the pleasure of its greatest school being run on half funds through the misdirected efforts of cranks, ft is to be hoped the State will defeat the measure to cut off the ajipropriation •nd let the University have its full share of money. Mann-Yager Nuptial* Miss Esther Yager and Dr. S. J. Mann were married in Marshfield by Father Curley early Wednesday morning, returning to Bandon the same day. The young couple had planned their escape from expectant friends very cleverly, and none but an intimate few knew the exact time and place. Mrs. Mann is one of Bandon’s fair daughters ami her friends in the town are numerous. Dr. Mann is a rising member of the medical profes sion, a sti anger in the length of resi dence but a pioneer in the number of friends and acquaintances. I le has been engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery at Langlois for a year past, and to the. present Mis. Mann about six months. They will reside it Lartglois. W*- herewith extend the congratu lations of the Recorder and its force from editor to printer's devil and predict that they will “live happily ever after.” -----ooo ---- Band Concert and Dance. The public of this section are to be afforded a rare musical treat Sat urday evening when the Bandon Concert Band gives its conceit at the local opera house. It is a fact undisputed that nowhere in the State is there a better aggregation of musicians than are those under the leadership of Prof. Emil Kausrud. Following the concert the band will give a dance at Bank Hall. The genuine and productive policy manifest by Ban don, where enterprises are launched in good faith and bear the stamp oi speedy fruition as the rule, must be a source of envy to our earnest disposed friends of the Coos baz But, then, here’s to you, section. One of the Unique functions of tin- present festivity season will be a leap year ball to be given at Bank Hall Saturday, March 14th, under the auspices of the Ladies’ Ai t Club. -Extensive arrangements are being perfected for the affair, and the ladies want it known that all leader ship of details generally is to be vested in the gentler sex on this par ticular occasion. In other words, gen tlemen, you must sit with true fem inine smile and extended limb and be entertained rather than entertain. If you wish to leave the bench for a delightful whirl (in ball room or to a down-town cigai store),'a shapely arm must essay to render you es- cort. The following dispatch from San Francisco dated February 20, is not believed to affect the steamers Eliza beth and Bandon unless certain con tingencies should arise; “Committee»» of both thè marine engineers’ association and the steam schooner owner« of San Francisco, empow ered to settle the dispute over the regulations governing the num ber of engineers to be carried, today decided to stand by the statements issued yesterday. This action makes it certain that a strike of engineers will be on by tomorrow night at 1 2 o’clock, and after that time no steam schooners will leave this porj with association engineers in charge. The ; owners asserted tonighl that should the engineers refuse to go on the vessels they will be abie to ’securfe indejtendent engineers in sufficient numbers to handle all of the btisi- ness at the present time, No rjues- tion ot wages has entered into the controversy as yet, but the engineers claim to have information that a re duction was con(em|>lated bv tlu owners.
