These harbors have, besides their natural advan tages received attention 'and im provements of our national govern ment to assist in their perfection, large sums of money being spent annually on the same, Besides the improvement to »he entrances the government has done considerable dredging and removing of obstacles to transport ition in their inner harbors. This fact is due chiefly to ttie d< mauds of our important comineict In conclusion, Capt. Hart says: ‘ The principal articles of commerce carried over the l»ar at /the entrance to the Coquille river aft* lumber and coal. This commerce is loaded oq small coasting vessels along the 25 miles of the river between its mouth and Coquille, and bv them taken to San Francisco. Considerable coal, a valuable and scarce commodity on th<- Pacific coast, is found on Co quille river about 15 mile- above its mouth.” EX rRAC IS OF OFFICIAL REPORT The Coquille river enters the Paci fic ocean in the southwestern put of Oregon. It is formed by four small forks, which coming from the coast range of mountains, unite in ihe vi cinity oi the town of Myrtle Point. ¿w ator are mounted upon solid concrete blocks, and the greatest care has been taken to put in a plant that would be sufficient to care fwr the demand. It is new, complete, and will be a credit to a much larger town than Bandon. A Frost 130 horsepower engine and boiler will handle the load with ease. The boiler is high pressure, 16x66. A General Electric Gener ator 3 phase,, revolving field, 2300 volt, will light up the place. It has a capacity of 2000 lights, 500 of which are now in and a large num ber of orders tor wiring have been left until the plant was in operation. The City of Bandon has ordered 12 arc lamps which will be located as follows: Oqe. *t each of these places—Fourth St. and Plank Road, 3rd St on top of hill, Baldwin’s Cor ner, 4th St near G. A. R. About 35 000 ton of rock had been used up to the time it was com- menced a ain this year, The last appropriation was for $55 000 and the present appropriation is for $05,- 000. Shingle time has done some good work in the way of building up Bandon and vicinity was able to secure a daily mail, and, incidentally, it has • pro cured the establishment of an extra night clerk service at Roseburg which enabled the San F rancisco mail *o reach Bandon one day earlier. The Chamber of Com- rnerce and the local business men. of which this organization is prin- cipally composed, with the assist- ante of other commercial bodies on the river and through their representatives, procured the largest river and harbor appropriation that has ever been secured for the Co quille River. The present Bandon Manufacturing Company, the Cody Mills and the Price Shipyards, are all valuable enterprises which were brought to Bandon through the efforts and influence of the Chamber of Commerce, and are lasting monuments to the business enter prises of Bandon show ing what co operation and organization will do. This organization now has a representative in Washington, D. C., attending the Rivers & Harbors Congress, through whose influence it hopes to secure an additional ap propriation for improving the lower water way of the Coquille River by G. T. Treadgold.
