The exhibit in the pavilion is perhaps not so great in quantity as formerly, but as to qual ity, it exceeds any previous effort ever put forth. The fruits and vege tables are of such kind as to make a most favorable exhibition of the pro ducts of this county. Although the time is not propitious for a large at tendance, yet the gate receipts show the attendance to exceed all pre vious fairs. Grains and grasses that it was thought the county could not grow, are all on hand. In the fan cy work department, the quality far exceeds any display ever before col lected here. Some idea of the extent of room necessary to supply the livestock de partment is obtained when it is found there are over ioo pens and stalls, and not one vacant. All kinds of stock, racers, roadsters and draft and driving horses, as also the finest of cattle, hogs, sheep, goats and poultry are on exhibition. Dr. Withycombe, of Corvallis, is here, and is a judge on stock. • Medford, Or.,—Returns just in from three more cars of Medford Bartletts Keep up the same general average in the Eastern cities, and it is now quite certain that the general average for the season for the full 70 cars shipped from this district will be at least $3 per box f. o. b. here. Growers are already beginning to speculate what figures will be obtain ed for our noted Comice and de Anjou pears, which for two seasons past have led the world in price and which are maturing in the best con dition possible the present year. There appears to be no limit to the price which Easterners will pay for these two famous varieties, and this year growers anticipate about $10 per box. • The Sun Typewriter. . BY Bandon Hardware Co Op polite Post Office. t i • . Albany, Or.—Practically all ol the homesteads in the upper Cala- pooia district will lie contested and some have been compelled to de fend their claims before the county clerk during the past week, It is reported every homesteader in that district will be called upon to defend his entry, and show cause why the same should not be canceled. It is alleged by the contestants that the lands in question are more valuable for timber than for agricultural pur poses, and that the claimants are fraudently endeavoring to gain title to lands that are located in the Cala- pooia mountains and cannot possibly be used for agricultural purposes. The cases are being bitterly con- tested and much interesting testi- mony is being introduced, The original claimants to these lands made proof on the same about a year ago and have been unable to have their proofs approved suf ficiently to warrant the department in issuing a final receipt or pat ent to them as entrymen. Washtucna, Wash. — All grain buyers are now out of the market and will take no wheat, (¡rain com panies are having difficulty in making arrangements with the O. R. X N. for cars, and an effort is being made to settle the question by a conference at Portland. The market will be exceedingly quiet. Grain buyers will run no risk of a < ongestion at the warehouses such as was experi enced last year when the grain laid out in the weather and rotted; the loss fell entirely upon the companies. . • • • •• Hillslxjfo, Oregon—The wirm weather, oi the past two weeks has enabled the hop grower- to garner a large part of the crop and it is in excellent condition. A few of the yards will finish picking tonight and with continued iair weather, next Saturday night will see most of the crop picked and dried. A slight mold has recently appeared in a few yards, but generally the hops are in good condition. Baker City, Ore. — The strike which completely tied np the Sump ter Valley road was settled Thurs day afternoon, after an all-day con ference between President Eccles and the striking engineers. The strikers gained all they asked for, the road granting the men the in crease in wages and pay for all over time. H. E. Wills, second highest officer in the Brotherhood of Loco motive Engineers, came from Cleve land, O., to investigate conditions and superintend the strike. As soon as the settlement was reached a train was made up and sent over the road to relieve the congested traffic. The strike caused great inconvenience to the merchants in Baker City and those along the road, as large amounts of perishable goods were being shipped out.
