Several Coos County candidates are on the anxious seat, but they will step off, June Gtb. In considering the question of Lo cal. Option which comes up at the State election, that fairness should prevail that is characteristic of a lib eral, free hearted people. All men should buve the right to decide what they wish, the majority beiug the end of the contest. The desire to accomplish partisan purposes and to maiutain party lon gevity, often leads the person or per sons so inclined luto efforts that take on all kiuds of phases, but the one that suggests a large Republican vote as a compliment to Roosevelt, out ranks the rankest. Voters should vote for men who are honest and who stand for and will use their energy and abil ity for the highest interests of the nation and leuve complimentary vot ing out. poquille Herald: R, M. In expressing their doubt of thia costly, complicated aud cum brous creation's efficiency in uctnal service. Senator Hale, Senator Gor man and others voiced no new senti ment: distrust of the battleship has long been felt liotli in and out of uiivaj circles. A battleship may cost as much as $8.900,000—a lot of egg* to put into 1 single basket. It may carry 800 hu man lives a far more serious matter. For 18,1X10,000 we could build 40 light swift, seagoing guultoHis, armed with oue heavy and several light gun.* each. Can any oneduubt what would be the result of a combat between Die battleship aud 40 gunboats? Homo of the gunboat* might go to the bottom: the battleship certainly would. The invention of gunpowder put an end, virtually, to body armor, which, al ways costly aud cumbrous, was nu lunger protective. Torpedoes, mines, ‘•«' bmatiues” and high power projec tiles will inevitably do away with the battleship, probably with the armored cruiser, and navies will again “fight in their shirt-sleeves." A sbipfeoating 10 times as much as another is not 10 times as fast nor 10 times as secure. It is a few times as destructive, very little less vulnerable, and no faster. In one’s private affairs one would not think of securing so small an increase of efficiency l>y so large uu incrense of expenditure. ------ OOO------ - Coast Mail—Dwight, L. One reason why the Japanese are forcing ttie Rtissiaus back so rapidly in Maucburia is that they have more men ‘fin the right pl ice," than (tie Russians have, or, for the present, can have. Another is that they are showing themselves the possessors of more ami better brains than the Rus sian article. No better proof of Russian military incompetency lit the present moment could be desired than the circum stances connected with the evacuation of Jiiuehang. At the outset of the war the St. Petersburg general stall' was stricken with fright lest the Jnp- aueseshouIJ suddenly deccend oiitti-’ city and overwhelm it.
