Meigs, tells much that is of interest iu tbe Iron and Steel Number of tbe Soieutitic American. Among other things Mr. Meigs says: “Six-inch gun», which used to weigh 11,000 pound», now ».¡si. 18.1MMJ tu 20.000 pounds. Tbe weight of tbe projectile of the»e guns lias not increase«), ami has remained always 100 pounds, lint tbe velocity at which tbe projectile leaves the gnu, has increased from about 2.000 feet per second to from 3.000 to 3.500 feet per secund, in consequence of a three or fourfold increase in the charge of powder. It may be argued that this change—that is, tbe constantly in creasing weight of guns of a given caliber—is not a wise one. The great cr.re and attention bestowed upou the convenient aud accurate moving of the gun, however, can be nothing bnt an improvement. Tbe growth and progress of change in artillery con struction sometimes seems arbitrary— seem« sometimes to be as arbitrary as tbe fashion in clothes. Old guns made three hundred years ago, winch may be seen iu tbe arsenals in this country and in Europe, bad about the same shape and were in nitmv respects similar to the guns of to-day. In tbe intermediate period, say about one hundred years ago, the guns had shrunken lip. ami become shorter aud larger iu diameter, with larger bores. We are now returning, or perhaps, more correctly, it should be said we have returned, to the fashions in artil lery of three hundred years ago. There are, of cotnse, many respects in which the modern weapon has a great advantage over tbe earlier one. It is made of stronger steel, nnd con centric hoops are shrunken together, whereby the power of the gun to re si»t internal pressure ie materiallj’ increased. But perhaps in no place ia the advantage more marked than in th» better mount or carriage of tbe present time. These are far better arranged than they used to bo, and the consequence is that tbe guns may lie much more rapidly and safely tired. The Ena tern war elond lower» again. Russia has made answer to Japan’« demands, and now it is aaid that war between tbe two countries ia inevitable. Both nations doubtless aro after glory, but it ia doubtful it the reward will be a recompense fur the price paid to secure it. It ia aa d that to the victor belongs tbe spoils of war, but tbe old proverb has gone astray. Iu these days I he spoils belong to tbe eormoruuts who fatten oq other people's adversity, and by tbe time tbe victory ia wun, »1..* i8 nothing left for the victor but empty glory, tbe cuiuiu.auto bav»u» taken cure that there wa9 no surplus spoil. This ia tbe modern way. What we want to know, is, whether that kis* tbe rnaidwo threw through the frosty air, one day this week, was frozen I efore it reached the lips of tbe young loverT If it was, judging from tbe forco wiih which it was ejected, and the distance it had to travel, it mu»t have proved quite a shock, aud made bis bead tingle for an hour. Mr. Riley was arresto«! imme diately, and oo the following day had preliminary bearing before Justice Kelly, at which 1« waved a forma) statement, aud was Committed to tbe county jail, without bail, to await tbe action of the circuit court While there seems to have existed some ill feelings between tbe parties, there is little, if any cause for such, known to the pnblic. A few eveuings Bgo, Williams, while blacked op as a darkey, passed through tbe mill for tbe purpose of teasing Riley, but this would hardly s»ein sufficient to bring about so serious a rasult Both parties are quiet, sober men, and it is a thing greatly deplored by Bll. Riley has a family consisting of a wife aud two little children, while Williams is a single man.
