THURSDAY. OCT. S.I 1»03- EDITORIAL. There ia much vandalism at the grave yard that needs attention. Homebody's children needs watching. The chicken thief ia still with us. and he fares sumptuously, every now and then, at the expense of bis neigh bors' ben rooata. Who ia he! Well, we don’t know, but from tbe way chickens and ducks disappear, sug gests that thia nocturnal visitor is not troubled by qualms of conscience, and neither is be afraid of choking upon stolen meat. Better Thaij Pjlla. The question has been asked—In wbAt way are Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets superior to tbe or dinary cathartic and liver pills! Our answer is—They are easier and more pleasant to take, and tbeir effect is so gentle and so agreeable, that one hardly realizes that it ia produced by a medicine. Then, they not only move tbe bowels, but improve tbe ap petite and aid the digestion. For pale at 25 cents per bottle by C. Y. Bnded Lite with a Pistol. Tbe position of the body suggested that he stood in froqt of tbe mirror to place tbe pistol Jo his bead. The telegraph line was at once util ized to call a physician, but tbe mao died about 3i30 p.m., without recover ing consciousness. Kinujcutt has been in Ooos County for 30 years or more. If they stop it will be pretty good evi dence that they were ordered by him ju tbe first place. A Sultan who will deliberately order the massacre of any people is too contemptibly low to be permitted to rule a people, and the powers of tbe world might well arise in their might and put him down. In other words, we appear to have been brought to a situation where the entire surplus of tbe treasury is in theory at a secretary’s disposal, to lend to such national banks as be chooses, and, inferentiaiiy, to withhold from such aa he may choose. No in terest is charged, but perfectly safe collateral is required. Not much dis cernment is needed to see that this is an uDusuaal situation, which should be considered with cautioD. We have said that tbe use made by Secretary Sbaw of tbe asserted powers in tbe care of the St Louis banks, has argu ments in its favor. We do not doubt that Mr. Shaw would, in bis further use of tbe same power, do bis best to serve public interests justly and im partially. He may, iu fact, never as some the same arbitrary power again, except where tbe money is offered on equal terms to all national banks. But tbe power has been assumed and tbe precedent created; and, in our judgment, the power is one which no state is likely to grant deliberately to its finance ministers, and the prece dent one which might, under conceiv able oircn instances, be grossly abused. It is not at all difficult to picture the use which a crafty politician in tbe treasury on tbe eve of a campaign, might take of it If such control over public funds, habitually exerted, did nothing else, it would infallibly revive tbe suspicions and accusations which surrounded tbe similar use of the treasury’s surplus moneys, tbrongb out tbe political struggles of tbe thir ties. The moral is, we should say, tbai no time ought to be lost iu providing clearly and unmistakably, by statute, bow and on wbat conditions, open to all national banka alike, tbe public etirplt]- Ujay be plaited with deposito ry in-li'.iti m *. file existing stains has always l»>eu dnugeroiia financial ly I but the secretary's latest move- have made it dangerous politically It would not be possible to carry very far the plan of removing blocks of money from tbe treasury and lending it to a designated group of banks, without giving ample material fur campaign literature for tbe opposition. Nor would it help matters, in this re spect. that tbe loan is made without interest. Sunday Welcome: A cheese that weighs ten tous will be exhibited at tbe world’s fair.
