The Socialist» of tbe First Congres sional district, in convention at Salem, last Friday, nominated John W. Ea gle, of Benton county, for Congress. Que of tbe planks of tbe party that should be Mcrupnlouaiy adhered to, ia jn effect that fusion witb other parties will not b" entertained. Socialism cannot fuse witb any other party for tbe reason that when it becomes mixed up with competition and spoil- ism it ceases to be socialism. I______________ A Sumpter hen has been doing the Siamese Twin act in producing a double egg, consisting of two perfect eggs joined together by a tube, com- posed of egg substance, tbe ooly blemish being a soft shell. Tbe Sumpter ben showed ability in the way of design, but she is little if any ahead of tbe Bandon ben. J. B. Marshall & Soo, of ibis place, bad a curiosity in beu fruit displayed, some threo weeks ago, in tbe shape of two eggs. One was a very large one, aud tbe other was nearly tbe usual size. Tbe large one bad been broken open and tbe smaller one bad been taken from it. Both were well shaped and had bard shells, and tbe only criti cism to make is that the ben was lav ish in the use of lime, as the shell of the larger egg was ample for tbe whole product, and she might bave saved tbe substance of the innef shell for future use. Telegram: Strikes, strikes, atrikea! They, or threats thereof, seem to be more numerous than ever. Bishop spanlding said recently that tbe time was near at hand when there would be no more strikes. This seems to be too optimistic a view. Yet in an increasing number of cases threat ened strikes are avoided by tbe yield ing of some points on both sides. This has been especially true during tbe past few months with respect to ditte^epcee between railroads or other great corporations and their employes. In a number of instances these com panies have yielded a large propor- |iop of the employes’ demands, while tbe workingmen have in several cases sqmewbat modified those demands, tbe business meanwhile going on without interruption or much friction. “When I had an atiack of tbe grip last wiuter (tbe second one) 1 actually cured myself with one bottle of Cham berlain's Cough Remedy,“ says Frank W. Perry, Editor of tbe En terpriae, Shortsville N. Y. “This is the honest truth. I at times kept from coughing myseli to pieces by taking a teaspoouful of this remedy, aod when the coughing spell would come on at night I would take a dose and if seemed that in tbe briefest in terval tbe cough would pass off aud I would go to sleep perfectly free from cough aud its accompanying pains. To say that the remedy acted as a most agreeable surprise ia putting it very mildly. I had uo idea that it would or could knock out tbe grip, simply because I bad never tried it for aueb a purpose, but it did, aud it seemed witb tbe second attack ot cougbiug the remedy caused it to not ouly bs of less durtit ion, but tbe pains were far less severe, and I bad not used one bottle before Mr. Grip bad bid me adien.” For sale by C. R ome , April 2.—Senator Vilari, ¡ d an address delivered today before tbe King and Queen at tbe opening of tbe International Historical Congress, made several allusions to tbe United States. He said Europe was shut iu between two great, powerful countries —Russia on tbe east and tbe United States on the west. Tbe latter, from a population of 30,000,000, bad risen to 80,000,000, and no one knew what number its population eventually would reach. Tbe Uuited States also bad taken tbe lead iu all works of progress and civilization. These two forces, acting od Europe, were likely to render necessary a union of tbe different European countries which would completely change tbe geo graphical situation to tbe universal advantage of Europe. Tbe Senator yldqd that he ¡Foresaw and predicted tbe 20th century will perhaps see tbe solution of many problems. “Tbe mixing'of tbe white aod black races,“ be continued, “brought about tbe war of secession in tbe United States, and tbe liberation of tbe negroes from slavery, but Ibis bad not harmonized or amalgamated the two races, which bale each other now perhaps more tbau ever before, “Tbe Uniied States probably will be the first to give ub an indication how to deal witb such grave aud im portant questions, wbicb Europe must meet throughout the two immense continents of Africa and Asia.*' ------ OOO------ Battle with Cattle Theivea.
