THURSDAY. OCT. 33, 1903. EDITORIAL. The Venezuelan government is one of those machines called portable. It has no fixed place of business and is mostly on the go. Guam, one of Uncle Sam’s new possessions cau boast of one lively day at least, The islaod experienced 180 earthquakes in 24 hours. Aud now it is the broom men that propose forming a trust. This will be a sweeping institution and will iuflu« ence every home in the land. Governor Taft has given the Fili pinos to understand that they may have independence when they are fitted for it—some generations hence. An exchange says that David Ben nett Hill is doubtless playing for the nomination for president if be sees any chance to win. There is nothing startlingabout that) hundreds of others have or are doing the same thiog. No doubt but that Hanna wonld like to have a turn. Just now Secretary Sbaw is buying up United States bonds at a good round premium. A like service was performed some fourteen years ago after which President Cleveland's administration was forced to issue more bonds. Is Wall Street prepar ing for another run on the govern ment? There is considerable pressure be ing brought in favor of calling an ex tra session of the Oregon legislature. Governor Geer ought to know what to do in the matter. If the interests of the states can be served by an extra session, the general public will stand by him, but if it is only for factional purposes, the publio will discover it alortly and be would lose the con fidence and respect of his constituents. It is a common saying that there is a man in the moon, but it remained for the Salemitee, according to the Caqital Journal, to discover a woman there. This discovery was made on the night of the recent eclipse, but as the Journal stated that there were no large telescopes in use there that night, it will be bard to make the average person believe the discovers did not do a telescoping business in bottles and glasses on that occasion, Grover Cleveland has been heard from again. He warns Democracy to stay with “tariff' Reform." It is time that new aud vital issues should be discnssed. Changes in tariff are not likely to remove the ills and iniquities of an unjust system. Tariff has prac tically done its work, and the billion an- triiMlB will still be able to control the situation. So tar they have won out with few exceptions, the principal one of which was the conditions which obtained during the late coal strike and then it was doubtless the attitude of President Roosevelt and Governor Odell, bacgeil by a growing sen timent that the coulfields should belong to the people aud be worked in their interest. The coal barons only backed down when the lion showed bis teeth It is said the farmers of Kansas aud Nebraska will burn corn for fuel this wiutA. I wonder if anyone is foolish enough to think they will do this because nobody wants the corn? Not by a jog full. There are millions of hungry mouths in this country that want that corn. They are willing to exchange their labor for it, but the crazy system supported by the votes of American working men prevents the exchange being made. There are a thousand and one things the Ne braska farmer wonld like to exchange bis corn for, but the workers who make these things cannot do so be cause he is not in control of the nec essary tools,— Coming Nation. The Mocialietic Trend, The New Orleans Daily News ac cuses the street car company, whose employes are now on a strike, of open ly violating the franchise agreement it has with that city. In order to bring about open war with its labor the News recites that it haB forced long hours upon its men, reduced wages, made and multiplied discon tent by wanton disregard of common rights and in many ways sought trou ble. If this is the weapon of the public corporation, if this is tbs method of the servant of the public, then the public should awaken. If peace and DO YOU NEED ANY HARD-WARE? W. C. T. U. N ew Y ork , Oct. 15.—English moral ists are staggered by the tremendous simplicity of the negotiations for bringing the coal strike to a close, cables the London correspondent of the Tribune. Neither sovereign nor prime minister here could have inter vened in au industrial crisis as the President has donei nor is there any English financier capable of playing Mr. Morgau’s part. No labor leader has arisen in England with Mr. Mitch ell's influence over the workers. The strike, if settled by arbitration, will be a fresh proof, according to English observers, that Americans have the power of keeping their heads while walking on the verge of a precipice.
