The Venezuelan government is one

a sweeping institution and will iuflu«

Governor Taft has given the Fili
pinos to understand that they may
have independence when they are
fitted for it—some generations hence.
An exchange says that David Ben
nett Hill is doubtless playing for
the nomination for president if be

nothing startlingabout that) hundreds
of others have or are doing the same

Just now Secretary Sbaw is buying
up United States bonds at a good
round premium. A like service was
performed some fourteen years ago
after which President Cleveland's
administration was forced to issue
more bonds. Is Wall Street prepar
ing for another run on the govern
ment?
There is considerable pressure be
ing brought in favor of calling an ex
tra session of the Oregon legislature.
Governor Geer ought to know what
to do in the matter. If the interests
of the states can be served by an extra
session, the general public will stand
by him, but if it is only for factional
purposes, the publio will discover it
alortly and be would lose the con
fidence and respect of his constituents.
It is a common saying that there is
a man in the moon, but it remained
for the Salemitee, according to the
Caqital Journal, to discover a woman
there. This discovery was made on
the night of the recent eclipse, but as
the Journal stated that there were no
large telescopes in use there that
night, it will be bard to make the
average person believe the discovers

Grover Cleveland has been heard
from again. He warns Democracy to
stay with “tariff' Reform." It is time
that new aud vital issues should be
discnssed. Changes in tariff are not
likely to remove the ills and iniquities
of an unjust system. Tariff has prac
tically done its work, and the billion

the situation. So tar they have won

one of which was the conditions which

It is said the farmers of Kansas
aud Nebraska will burn corn for fuel
this wiutA. I wonder if anyone is
foolish enough to think they will do
this because nobody wants the corn?
Not by a jog full. There are millions
of hungry mouths in this country that
want that corn. They are willing to
exchange their labor for it, but the
crazy system supported by the votes
of American working men prevents
the exchange being made. There are
a thousand and one things the Ne
braska farmer wonld like to exchange
bis corn for, but the workers who
make these things cannot do so be
cause he is not in control of the nec
essary tools,— Coming Nation.

simplicity of the negotiations for
bringing the coal strike to a close,
cables the London correspondent of
the Tribune. Neither sovereign nor
prime minister here could have inter

Mr. Morgau’s part. No labor leader

observers, that Americans have the
