President Roosevelt attacked the Beef Trust, aud now the question arises, will the trusts have him in dicted for assault? Io all probability the indictment will bo on in 11)04. Congress adjourned without giving Cuba reciprocity. There has I een an expressed opinion that probably President RoosevMt will find a way out yet. This may bo true but it is not likely that be will call an extra session of congress for that purpose. s The tug Katie Coos Bay News: Cook, which arrived from Rogue river, Jast week, in charge of C»pt. Caughell, is being thoroughly overhauled an.I repaired by II. R. Reed, at his ship yard at Bay City. Port Orford Tribune: Air,Stearns President of the Pacific I'nrniture & Lumber Co.,' and Mr. Berner, a member of the same company, arrived from Los Angeles last week, aud have been making an investigation of their timber and milling interests in this county. We understand that they are well pleased with tho outlook, and that there are favorable prospects for the inauguration of other important milling enterprises, at Elk Iliver and elsewhere. —ozo— municipal Nocia’isisi (nGreat Ilritain. / / Erm».the Evening Telegram. Mr. Boyle, the American Consul at Liverpool, bas collected facts showing a great extension of municipal owner ship in Great Britain in recent years, so that now 931 British cities own their water works, 99 tlieir street rail ways, 181 supply electricity, and 240 conduct gas works, so that about half the gas users in England consume municipal gas. Great Britain also, besides owuing the telegraph and planning to nbsorb the telephone lines, has cities that own and rent houses, an auditorium for entertainment, a sterilized milk establishment, a hotel, even a race course. In Bristol the city bought and owns the dock out right, but in Liverpool they are owned by a public ti tu-l, composed mostly of those who pay dock charges, ai.d which devotes al) j :< tits to improve ments. Thus the net earnings accrue to tne city’s advantage; aud London is p.r< pr.rit.g to adopt this system also besides owning the water works,' streetcar lines, the electric light and power plant, aud on« of the largest public bath systems in the world provides public laundries for the poor districts, furnishe:, flowers and, plants there and in th« slums, sells sterilized milk at Cost to the pour and, gives municipal lectures, in addition to music in parks, technical schools, etc. Now it is al.- providing dwell ings for the poor 1 y compelling the dvinolishmeiit of unsanitary buildings and providing the deposed tenants with clean municipal lodging houses at 45 cents for one room. GO to ‘-it cents, fex two rooms, and 81 25 to :1 50 for four rooms, per week. So far the city Ijas paid $1,925,000 for demolished buildings, S'335.825 L r laud, and $732,835 for coi.structiop; but it is acknowledged that the rents collected fall far short of paying ti e cost. Liverpool bought the street car line five years ago, made them first class in every respect, .and charges from 2 cents for three miles and less up to eight emts for eight miles ami over. The working expenditure last your was 63 per cent of tho gross receipts, the uet profits going to the poor rates and the rcservo fund. This is carrying municipal owner ship or socialism to extremes that have been only dreamed of in this, country, aufl peiii.apa would nut be pructicablo ex profitable hero, l’er- baps Biiti-n cities do not have so many politicians, keen to nn.k« some thing out of the public to put in their purses, as American cities have. ——OQO------ MOTNHLY W l:.A 1II dll 11EI-OI1T. nABS.
