Oregon Battle of the Books 2018-19: Available for check out at the Tribal Library. Book Review: “Requiem for a People” by Stephen Dow Beck- ham. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about Oregon Native American history and culture. This is an eye-opening chronicle of southwestern Oregon’s Rogue River Indian wars and their subsequent subjugation and removal from their homelands. “Requiem for a People” was first published in 1971 and was the first scholarly look at Oregon’s Rogue River Native Americans, whose way of life was quickly destroyed when the West was settled by Europeans. There were a documented 9,500 Natives in the area when settlers first came to Oregon and after six years only 2,000 Rogues survived the wars, diseases, starvation and destruction. We are a half day immersion program offering instruction in Chinuk through our culture and place-based curriculum. Our students attend half day in our program and must be enrolled in Willamina Elementary School for the second half of the school day. No prior language experience required, however we do have language and tribal preference once we are at capacity.
