S moke S ignals MAY 1, 2018 19 Reyes named co-Athlete of the Year Walking On... Gerald “Jerry” W. Surber April 5, 1944-April 12, 2018 Tribal Elder Gerald “Jerry” W. Surb- er, 74, walked on April 12, 2018, at his home with his wife of 52 years, Nancy. He was born April 5, 1944. Jerry was preceded in death by his son, Jay, on April 11, 2013. Jerry loved his job driving a dump truck for 48 years and hauled rock for the Tribe for several years. He was loved by many and will be missed. No services are scheduled at this time. Tribal member Jordan Reyes, a junior at Willamina High School, was named co-Athlete of the Year in wrestling by the Yamhill County News-Register. Reyes won the Class 3A Oregon state championship in the 106-pound division earlier this year. He shared the honor with teammate Keegan Cook, who was a state champion in the 285-pound division. Reyes went 22-1 in his junior year wrestling for Willamina High, in- cluding pinning every opponent leading up to his Class 3A championship match with Cascade Christian’s Ryan Vidlak. In addition, Tribal member Moses Mercier, a freshman at Willamina High, was named to the newspaper’s All-Valley Team. Mercier wrestled in the 113-pound division. In all, Willamina High placed nine students on the All-Valley Team. O PEN E NROLLMENT FOR 2018-19 Portland arts center seeks Standing Rock art PORTLAND — The Elisabeth Jones Art Center, a new art space that opened in March, is seeking artist submissions for a show that will be about Standing Rock two years later. Chosen artists will receive from $500 to $1,500 to participate. The arts center is especially interested in hearing from artists who were at Standing Rock, as well as themes that address sacred land and water. Applications also are being accepted for a visiting artist residency that would run from June 1-6. For the visiting artist, the arts center is inter- ested in an installation or performance piece that is community involved and developed through that five-day period. Deadline for proposals is Thursday, May 17, with an exhibit date of Thursday, June 7. The show is open to all mediums, which includes in- stallation, performance and community interactive work. For applications, include no more than 10 images of current work, a resume and clear statement of intent to EJartcenter@gmail.com. There is no entry fee. Need something notarized? Tribal Court staff is available at no charge for notaries 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday though Friday with the exception of noon to 1 p.m. Please be sure to bring a photo ID with you. C HINUK K INDERGARTEN I MMERSION As of May 14th, 2018 we will be accepting registration applications for interested incoming Kindergarteners. We are a half day immersion program offering instruction in Chinuk through our culture and place-based curriculum. Our students attend half day in our program and must be enrolled in Willamina Elementary School as well. No prior language experience required, however we do have language and Tribal preference once we are at capacity.
