Rattlesnake Butte property taken into trust Tribal Lands Manager Jan Looking Wolf Reibach announced on Wednes- day, June 14, that 96.68 acres of conservation lands – Rattlesnake Butte – in Lane County near Junction City have been taken into trust. The property was purchased by the Tribe through the Bonneville Power Administration’s Willamette Wildlife Mitigation Fund using BPA funding. “The project is especially historic for the Tribe as it is the first property the Tribe has transferred into trust out of our local area,” Reibach said. “Transferring lands into trust is an inclusive and highly technical process that requires deliverable-based project management by the Tribal Lands Department and participation of several departments, including Legal, Natural Resources, Engineering/Facilities/GIS and THPO (Tribal Historic Preservation Office).” Reibach recognized Realty Specialist Teresa Brocksen and Senior Staff Attorney Jennifer Biesack for their work to identify and implement mul- tiple solutions during the process. Under federal law, lands held in trust for Native Americans cannot be sold or transferred to non-Native Americans and can benefit from federal programs for business development, housing, environmental and cultural protection.
