S moke S ignals FEBRUARY 15, 2017 Food Bank provides boxes, seeks help The Grand Ronde Food Bank – iskam mfkhmfk haws – is operated by Marion-Polk Food Share, which was been leading the fight to end hunger since 1987 because no one should be hungry. Recipients of SNAP, TANF, SSI or LIHEAP assistance automat- ically qualify for assistance at the Grand Ronde Food Bank, 9675 Grand Ronde Road. No one will be turned away in need of a food box. “We believe that everyone deserves to have enough to eat,” says Food Bank Coordinator Francene Ambrose. “You are welcome to get a food box at each of our regular weekly distributions. No one will be turned away in need of a food box.” Upcoming food box distribution dates are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, and 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. The Food Bank will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20, in observance of the Tribal Chiefs’ Day holiday. Those who are unable to pick up a food box can fill out an autho- rized representative form and that person can pick up a food box on your behalf. The authorization is good for one year. The Food Bank continues to seek volunteers to help with repack- ing food, putting food on the shelves, handing out food boxes and end-of-month inventory. In addition, the Food Bank is participating in a program called Fresh Alliance in which volunteers pick up food donations directly from area stores. Volunteers with a truck who could pick up at these stores at least once a week and a partner to ride along and help load are being sought. Call to ensure someone is available to assist. People also can sign up for a monthly e-mail for the Food Bank calendar and events, as well as follow the Food Bank on Facebook. The Food Bank is an equal opportunity provider. Contact Ambrose at 503-879-3663 or at fambrose@marionpolk- foodshare.org for more information or to volunteer. 3 Linfield College sets Voice From Standing Rock event McMINNVILLE – Linfield College will host an event called “Voices From Standing Rock” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Pioneer Hall Reading Room. The event will feature students and community members who have traveled to the Standing Rock Sioux Nation in North Dakota. They will share their stories and experiences with event attendees. Linfield is working in partnership with Yamhill Valley Peacemakers and the Pacific Northwest Stands With Standing Rock organization. CTGR Higher Education Program deadlines set There are now only two Higher Education programs depending on whether you are full-time or part-time. The deadline for the Full-Time College program is at least 30 days before the start of classes. The deadline for the Part-Time College program is at least 10 days before the start of class. WIC visits Health & Wellness Center Pregnant? Breastfeeding? Does your family include a child under the age of 5? If so, you may qualify for the Women, Infants and Children program. With WIC, people can receive answers to nutritional questions and access fruits and vegetables, whole grains, eggs, milk, cheese, juice, cereal and more. A WIC representative visits the Health & Wellness Center on the third Tuesday of the month, which will be Feb. 21. Walk-ins are welcome between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. When WIC clients arrive at the Health & Wellness Center, they should enter through the Wellness Department located at the back of the medical wing. It accepts clothes, small appliances, small pieces of furniture, elec- tronics and household goods that are clean and in good condition. It does not accept books, large TVs or large furniture, but there is a community board where people can post those items. Donations are accepted during regular business hours.
