16 S moke S ignals AUGUST 15, 2015 Special Olympics World Games Contributed photo Tribal Elder Dorothy Leno, who used to compete in Special Olympics swimming events when she lived in southern California in the 1970s, attended the 2015 Special Olympics World Games opening ceremonies held at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Saturday, July 25. Leno was invited to attend by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to represent her Native American heritage and her generation of Special Olympics athletes. She was accompanied by her half-sister, Tribal Council member Denise Harvey, who used to volunteer for Special Olympics when she lived in southern California as well. Approximately 6,500 Special Olympics athletes representing 165 countries participated in the games between July 25 and Aug. 2.
