S moke S ignals AUGUST 15, 2015 Walking On... Ivan E. Jeffers Dec. 31, 1920 – Aug. 3, 2015 Tribal Elder Ivan E. Jeffers walked on on Aug. 3, 2015, in Eugene, Ore., at the age of 94 from an age-related illness. He was born on Dec. 31, 1920, in Eugene to Melvin and Edna (Michael) Jeffers. He graduated from Crow High School. He mar- ried Velma Jean Tutison on Jan. 2, 1953, in Eugene. They had four children: Harry, Belden, Judy and Albert. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors in general. Ivan was a career logger. He is survived by his three sons: Harry Jeffers of Portland, Ore., Belden Jeffers of Grand Ronde, Ore., and Albert Jeffers of Drain, Ore.; one daughter, Judy Ballini of Beavercreek, Ore.; 11 grand- children and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Jeffers, on Feb. 26, 1976. A funeral service will be held at West Lawn Funeral Home, 225 S. Danebo Ave., Eugene, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, with a burial committal to follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements have been entrusted to West Lawn Memorial Fu- neral Home. Upcoming food box distributions are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21; and 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 26. No one will be turned away in need of a food box. Those who are unable to pick up a food box may fill out an authorized representative form and that person can pick up a food box on your behalf. The authorization is good for one year. The Grand Ronde Food Bank – iskam mfkhmfk haws – is run by Marion-Polk Food Share, which has been leading the fight to end hunger since 1987 because no one should be hungry. “It takes a community to fight local hunger,” says Food Bank Coordi- nator Francene Ambrose. “Your gift of time and talent means so much to individuals, families and children who are struggling. We are looking for assistance in repacking food, putting food on the shelves, handing out food boxes on distribution days and end-of-the-month inventory. Groups are welcome and other opportunities are available.” Call on non-distribution days to ensure someone is available to as- sist you.
