4 APRIL 1, 2015 S moke S ignals Veterans SEB slates Memorial Day event 2010 – Results of a per capita survey found that 58 percent of those responding favored paying per capita four times a year while 23 per- cent liked annual payments and 18 percent favored two payments per year. More than 860 Tribal members responded to the survey. 2005 – Community mem- bers gathered to split cedar logs. After the logs were split, planks were made to build a traditional plank- house in Grand Ronde. Plankhouses were the tra- ditional way of living for File photo the Grand Ronde people and other Northwest Natives. 2000 – After eight years at the helm, Smoke Signals editor Tracy Dugan resigned. “I have enjoyed the chance to get to know fellow Tribal members and their families,” she wrote. “Because of my Tribe, I have experienced a sense of contribution and service in my life I doubt I’ll ever find anywhere else.” 1995 – Tribal members were advised to expect a shift in traffic on Highway 18 near the Strawberry Patch while a new underpass was being built to accommodate the under-construction Tribal casino. 1990 – Tribal members were encouraged to limit doctor visits, avoid emergency rooms and use alternate resources in order for the Tribe to avoid a shortage of Contract Health Services monies. Tribal members also were encouraged to use the Tribal Health Clinic as often as possible to save CHS dollars. 1985 – Roger Harrison won $50 for creating the Tribal logo. “My interpretation of my logo is that Spirit Mountain has always been a symbol and a historic landmark of the Grand Rondes to me, and the five eagle feathers represent the five major remaining Tribes,” he said. Contact Higher Edu- cation for more information at 1-800-422-0232, ext. 2275. n The Tribe’s Veterans Special Event Board will hold the traditional Me- morial Day event beginning at noon Monday, May 25, with a ceremonial meal in the Community Center. At 1 p.m., the formal ceremony will begin with Veterans Special Event Board Chairman Steve Bobb Sr., a Vietnam-era Marine Corps veteran, giving the invocation and acting as master of ceremonies. Tribal member Jolanda Catabay will sing the national anthem and Roy- alty will perform “The Lord’s Prayer.” The Grand Ronde Honor Guard will post the colors and Land and Culture Manager Jan Looking Wolf Reibach will perform a medley of taps and “Amazing Grace” on Native flute. Speakers will include Tribal Council Chairman Reyn Leno, also a Vietnam-era Marine Corps veteran, and Jerry Wilson, Yamhill County Veterans’ Services officer. The names of veterans being added to the West Valley Veterans Memo- rial also will be read. n Ceremonial Hunting Update The Ceremonial Hunting Board is short one voting member. Anyone on the ceremonial hunting list interested in serving on the board should contact me for an application. We have harvested one deer so far this year. Our meat processor was on vacation for three weeks so we had to stop hunting. Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings. We will meet at least quarterly with the exact dates to be set soon. We are looking forward to a productive year and encourage the use of the venison and elk we harvest. If you need meat, you can request a form from Natural Resources. Thank you. Marline Groshong, chairperson, 503-474-7000. n Availability of transit grant funds The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is providing notice that eligible transportation providers may apply for federal 5310 grant funds allocated to the Tribe for the 2015-17 biennium by the Oregon Department of Transportation. Projects providing transportation services to seniors and persons with disabilities are eligible for funding including those that also serve the general public. Thus far the Tribe has chosen to use these funds for Cherriots and Yamhill Transit service through intergovernmental agreements. Applications submitted for projects serving the Grand Ronde community must be submitted to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde not later than 4 p.m. April 6, 2015. For Who: 6-12 grade Tribal member youth When: Saturday, April 11th The Tribal Council adopted, on an emergency basis, amendments to the Housing Ordinance at the Feb.11, 2015, Tribal Council meeting. The primary purpose of the amendments is to consolidate the housing program with other Tribal programs by dissolving the Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority and creating a Housing Department under the General Manager, and to replace the Housing Board with a Grievance Review Board to hear tenant and applicant matters and to provide policy guidance to the Housing Department. If your family member or friend is a veteran and there is not a U.S. flag present on their plot on holidays, such as Memorial Day, please contact the department, which will do its best to mark all gravesites of veterans.
