4 DECEMBER 1,2013 Smoke Signals AGO 1 V crr:t-Aotrcy 2008 - The Tribe's oldest Elder, Nora Kimsey, prepared to celebrate her 100th birthday on Dec. 2. Five days later during the monthly Gen eral Council meeting, the Tribe honored Kimsey for her contributions to the Tribe over the years. 2003 - Orand Konde Station was preparing to open with Manager Darrel Clark (Cherokee) at the helm of the new Tribal business en terprise. The store was opening with Taco Time, TCIiY and Boyd's Coffee franchises. 1998 -The Tribe's new 100-room hotel, Spirit Mountain Lodge, was scheduled for completion and a grand opening on Dec. 21. The $9 mil lion hotel is the last of three phases of expansion after the completion of Spirit Mountain Casino and Ix'gends restaurant. 1993 -The Tribe celebrated the 10th anniversary of Restoration on Nov. 22 at Grand Konde Grade School with a dinner and mini pow wow. Special guests include U.S. Rep. Les AuCoin, Sande Schmidt, Don Wharton of the Native American Rights Fund and state Sen. Dick Springer. In addition, Tribal employees who had worked for the Tribe five years or more received a com memorative coin with the Grand Ronde logo embossed on it. 1988 - Tribal Council unani mously approved a resolution in support of Chris Leno's appoint ment to the U.S. Naval Academy. Leno was attending Oregon State University, majoring in business administration. 1983 - President Ronald Reagan signed House Resolution 3885, which became Public Law 98-165, the Grand Ronde Restoration Act, ending 29 years of Termination for the Tribe. Pharmacy runs Drug Take-Back Program The Tribal Pharmacy is operating a Drug Take-Back Program. Tribal and community members can bring medications that are unused, expired, discontinued or unwanted to the Tribal Health & Wellness Clinic and Pharmacy staff will ensure they are disposed of properly. In addition, there will be a reward raffle for people who bring in unwanted medications between Nov. 25 and Dec. 18. However, the Pharmacy runs the Take-Back Program year CTGRTERO program seeking construction workers and contractors The Tribal Employment Rights Office (TERO) is developing a list of Tribal member and Indian workers who are interested in obtaining job as signments on construction projects. TERO is also preparing a list of Tribal and Indian businesses (IOBs). IOBs will be certified to become eligible to participate in contracting opportunities in fulfillment of IOB preference provisions contained in the TERO Ordinance. Construction work will be primarily in heavy highway construction on projects throughout the region. CTGR and ODOT are negotiating an agree ment that will provide hiring preference to Indians who are dispatched to projects through TERO. Once the agreement is in place, those with experience in the construction trades will have immediate opportunities for employment. In addition, those seeking to begin careers in the construc tion trades may be eligible for training opportunities available including on-the-job training and apprentice assignments. TERO preference requirements also apply to all construction projects on the reservation and a need for workers and contractors experienced in the building trades will create opportunities for employment. Contracting opportunities for IOBs also will be available on these projects. H fffft Tribal Employment Rights Office (TERO) Commission is Being Formed Accepting Applications for TERO Commission CLOSES: DECEMBER 20, 2013 The Tribal Employment Rights Commission is a regulatory body charged with enforcement of the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance. Five (5) Commissioners will be appointed by the Tribal Council to serve a three (3) year term The Commission will work with the TERO Director and take all appropriate actions to implement and enforce the TERO Ordinance and make recommendations to the Tribal Council on amendments to the Ordinance. Commissioners will be required to attend regularly scheduled monthly meetings and will be paid a stipend.
