Space is limited Portland Area v..J- f- ' r Eugene Area Cradleboards, shawls, drum cases and regalia are just a few items Carol Haskins has beautified with her amazing bead work. At the age of 8, Carol's aunt started her on her first project known as a "daisy chain." Since then Carol has been in love with beading and does it on a dairy basis. Colleen Payne is also a fan of beading and has been a teacher with Carol for years. "She is my mentor and I couldnl have done it without her." The two ladies have made many personal projects together in addition to the time they spend teaching. Beading projects can range from hours to weeks, but the easy-to-4eam process makes it a great hobby for all ages. Participants leave the classes with new techniques and most importantly the background of the beading culture. Carol shares, "I love that everyone comes together like a family or a gathering of the community. We laugh, share stories, and enjoy a potluck meal together" Carol and Colleen teach classes in Eugene, Portland and Grand Ronde that all last about three hours. Contact the Land and Culture Department for the current schedule and to get involved with beading! Note: Culture classes are free for enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal members: No charge for the classes or materials. These classes are also free for Tribal member spouses, family and descendants - if materials (beads, dentalia etc.) are required, they must bring their own, use donated if available or reimburse for any materials provided.
