4 JUNE 1,2013 Smoke Signals 2008 - Gov. Ted Kulon goski attended the Tribe's annual Memorial Day cere mony held at the West Valley Veterans Memorial. The gov ernor delivered the keynote address and it was the first Tribal ceremony held during which ceremonial meat was served. 2003 - Dedication of the West Valley Veterans Memorial was held on May 31. In addition, Spirit Mountain Community Fund celebrated hitting the $20 million mark in giving with an event held at the Portland Art Museum's grand ballroom. Representatives of many of the 254 recipient organizations of the fund's 347 grants since 1997 attended. 1998 - Secretary of State Phil Keisling stepped in for Gov. John Kitzhaber, who was ill, during Tribal Information Day at the State Capitol in Salem. "We are finally taking our rightful place in the family of Indian nations," said Tribal Council Chair Kathryn Har rison. "By coming here, we are exercising our right of sovereignty." 1993 - Only six Tribal members were running for election. Val Grout, Matthew Kirkland, Eugene LaBonte, Mark Mercier, Margaret Provost and Leon "Chip" Tom were running for Tribal Council. 1988 - Congress repealed House Resolution 108, which led to the government policy of terminating federal recognition of some Native American Tribes. Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye, chairman of the Select Committee on Indian Affairs, said that "the Indian nations of the United States can rest easier with the knowledge that termination is no longer even a possible threat. Termination was a doomed policy from its inception primarily because it was both morally and legally indefensible." H.R. 108 was approved on June 9, 1953, during the 83rd Congress. Veterans Royalty meeting scheduled A Veterans' Royalty meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, in the Tribal Community Center for all girls ages 8 to 18. The Veterans Special Event Board will be giving out instructions and applications to girls who want to run for Veterans Queen 2013 14. Notice to Tribal member construction, contractors and workers The Tribe is developing a list of Tribal member-owned construc tion companies and workers with road construction experience who are interested in performing construction work for the Tribe and on Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) projects. The Tribe is negotiating a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ODOT to provide hiring preference to Tribal members, those with construction companies and individuals with construction experience to work on various ODOT road construction projects.
