Smoke Signals
2008 - Gov. Ted Kulon
goski attended the Tribe's
annual Memorial Day cere
mony held at the West Valley
Veterans Memorial. The gov
ernor delivered the keynote
address and it was the first
Tribal ceremony held during
which ceremonial meat was
served.
2003 - Dedication of the West Valley Veterans Memorial was
held on May 31. In addition, Spirit Mountain Community Fund
celebrated hitting the $20 million mark in giving with an event held
at the Portland Art Museum's grand ballroom. Representatives of
many of the 254 recipient organizations of the fund's 347 grants
since 1997 attended.
1998 - Secretary of State Phil Keisling stepped in for Gov. John
Kitzhaber, who was ill, during Tribal Information Day at the State
Capitol in Salem. "We are finally taking our rightful place in the
family of Indian nations," said Tribal Council Chair Kathryn Har
rison. "By coming here, we are exercising our right of sovereignty."
1993 - Only six Tribal members were running for election. Val
Grout, Matthew Kirkland, Eugene LaBonte, Mark Mercier, Margaret
Provost and Leon "Chip" Tom were running for Tribal Council.
1988 - Congress repealed House Resolution 108, which led to the
government policy of terminating federal recognition of some Native
American Tribes. Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye, chairman of the Select
Committee on Indian Affairs, said that "the Indian nations of the
United States can rest easier with the knowledge that termination
is no longer even a possible threat. Termination was a doomed policy
from its inception primarily because it was both morally and legally
indefensible." H.R. 108 was approved on June 9, 1953, during the
83rd Congress.
