4 FEBRUARY 1,2013 Smoke Signals Upcoming training to prepare members for construction trades 2008 - Tribal Court introduced a new pro gram, the Peacemaker Program, to help Trib al and community members solve and settle disputes before going to trial. Tribal members Sam Henny and David Dellart were the first two trained Peacemakers who will volunteer in Tribal Court to resolve disputes. 2003 A contingent of Grand Ronde Tribal members attended the Inaugural Hall for newly elected Gov. He also has a good understanding of how Tribal governments work." 1998 The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde announced the creation of the Hatfield Fellowship in honor of Sen. Mark O. Hatfield for his accomplishments as governor of Oregon and as a U.S. senator on behalf of the Tribe. The fellow will serve as a liaison between a member of the Oregon congressional delegation and Oregon Tribes on issues affecting Native Americans 1993 - Approximately 40 people attended an open house to dedicate the Early Childhood Education Facility near the Grand Ronde Chemi cal Dependency Program offices. Travis Benoist performed a cleansing ceremony before the blessing, which was given by Kathryn Harrison. 1988 Enrollment Director Margo George reported that Tribal membership stood at 2,273. "In 1954, there were 862 members listed on the final membership roll before Termination," she wrote. "Our membership has almost tripled in the last 34 years." However, she reported, there were still more than 200 members who were listed on the 1954 membership roll who were not on file. Funded through a $76,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation and Bureau of Labor & Industries, the train ing will teach the fundamentals of carpentry, paving and heavy equipment, as well as the personal skills required to be successful in the trades. Individuals completing the pro gram will receive training and attain three industry recognized certifications in first aidCPR, OSHA 10-Hour and flagging. In addition, successful partici pants will receive a certificate of completion from the N. W. College of Construction. The training is tentatively set to start on Monday, Feb. 25, in Grand Ronde. Deadline to apply is Mon day, Feb. 11. According to a press release from the N.W. College of Construction, the training has requirements and a code of conduct, which include ar riving early to each class (a second tardy disqualifies continuation); completing homework assignments by their due date; achieving a 70 percent or better on each exam; not missing any days; and not leaving class early. Week 1 will concentrate on basic employability and communication skills and an introduction to hand tools and power tools. Week 2 will tackle construction math, basic rigging, construction drawings and the flagging certifi cation. Week 3 will deal with building materials, floor systems, and wall, ceiling and roof framing. Week 4 will teach grading and basic operational techniques for backhoes, rollers and pavers. The last week will provide an in troduction to concrete and reinforc ing materials, as well as concrete construction and finishing.
