4 SEPTEMBER 1 5, 201 2 Smoke Signals 2007 - Grand Ronde voters unseated two incumbents and voted in Chris Mercier, June Sell-Sherer and Steve Bobb Sr. in the 2007 Tribal Council election. 2002 - Photos showed the continued construction of the West Valley Veterans' Memorial. The memorial was the culmination of years of planning and fundraising by both veterans and the community. Sheets Construction was in charge of building the memorial, which was designed by Steve Iiobb Sr. 1997 - Grand Ronde voters elected Ed Pearsall, Val Grout and Robert Mercier to Tribal Council in an election that saw record turnout. More than 700 Tribal members voted, which was an all-time high. 1992 - Ed Larsen, owner of Spirit Mountain Store, was featured. Larsen grew up in the Grand Ronde area and attended Willamina High School. He works part-time as a logger and his wife, Shirley, runs the store. Larsen said the biggest drawback to owning the store is that people want to get merchandise on a credit basis. 1987 - Tribal Chairman Mark Mercier thanked Joann McClary and Mary Ring for coordinating the first Tribal Pageant held during the third annual Contest Powwow. The pageant selected Cindy Martin, Mario George, Jolene Poole and Amber Cook as Royalty Court. He also cited Greg Archuleta for all of his hard work performed during powwow and the cleanup afterward. QflDftiuiG'all Triastl Board slaftGS cDGammaip days The Tribe's Cultural Trust Board is sponsoring Cultural Area cleanup days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 and 29. The Trust Board will provide lunch and refreshments to those who help. Some of the work that needs to be done includes rebuilding the sweat lodge, putting up a clothes line to dry the blankets when people are finished with sweats, repairing the wood storage shed, chopping wood for winter storage, clearing overgrown blackberries and Scotch broom, and more. If you are interested in sweats, join in and help with the work that needs to be done. "Everyone is invited and welcome to come and help take care of our sacred sweat lodge area in a good way," said Cultural Trust Board Chair Perri McDaniel. D Elder-Youth Tournaments slated for Sept. 1 7 at center Elder-Youth tournaments in horseshoes, ladder golf, pool and bingo will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Elders' Activity Center. There will be a first, second and third awarded for every event, including bingo. Youth need to be in sixth through 12th grades to participate. Sign-up sheets are located in the Elders' Activity Center and Youth Education building. B Community Bash set for Sept. 19 The Tribe's Youth Prevention Program will hold its third annual End of the Summer Community BBQ Bash starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the fire pit in Tilixam Circle in Tribal housing. Ribs, hamburgers with all the fixings, potato salad, watermelon, water and juices will be served. Attendees can bring their favorite dessert to share. Door prizes will be awarded. D Indian Health Board seeks focus group The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board is conducting a study on community attitudes toward childhood immunizations and is seeking the help of parents, guardians and anyone else who takes care of or used to care for Tribal children. The board will be in Grand Ronde from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Health and Wellness Center to conduct a focus group and is in need of eight to 12 volunteers who fit the description stated above. Volunteers will receive a $20 gift card for their time and light refreshments will be served. Vans will leave the Elders' Activity Center in Grand Ronde at 7 and 10 a.m, sharp and return by 5 p.m. Lunch will include burgers, hot dogs and a picnic-style luncheon. The trip is open to Elders and their spouses only. Although a state fishing license is not required, participants must have a Tribal fishing license, which can be obtained at the Natural Resources Department at 503-879-2424.
