Smoke Signals
2007 - Grand Ronde voters unseated two incumbents and voted in
Chris Mercier, June Sell-Sherer and Steve Bobb Sr. in the 2007 Tribal
Council election.
2002 - Photos showed the continued construction of the West Valley
Veterans' Memorial. The memorial was the culmination of years of
planning and fundraising by both veterans and the community. Sheets
Construction was in charge of building the memorial, which was designed
by Steve Iiobb Sr.
1997 - Grand Ronde voters elected Ed Pearsall, Val Grout and Robert
Mercier to Tribal Council in an election that saw record turnout. More
than 700 Tribal members voted, which was an all-time high.
1992 - Ed Larsen, owner of Spirit Mountain Store, was featured.
Larsen grew up in the Grand Ronde area and attended Willamina High
School. He works part-time as a logger and his wife, Shirley, runs the
store. Larsen said the biggest drawback to owning the store is that
people want to get merchandise on a credit basis.
1987 - Tribal Chairman Mark Mercier thanked Joann McClary and
Mary Ring for coordinating the first Tribal Pageant held during the third
annual Contest Powwow. The pageant selected Cindy Martin, Mario
George, Jolene Poole and Amber Cook as Royalty Court. He also cited
Greg Archuleta for all of his hard work performed during powwow and
the cleanup afterward.
