4 JUNE 15,2012 Smoke Signals 2007 - The old Porter House, built in the 1920s, was torn down to make way for the new Elders' Activity Center. The building served as a home, the Tribe's alcohol and drug rehabilitation center, as an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting hall and as an office for the construc tion crew building adult foster care homes. 2002 - Ron Karten, a longtime freelance writer, was hired as the new staff writer at Smoke Signals. In addition, Smoke Signals purchased new newspaper dispensing machines that were located in Grand Ronde and Salem, and will be located soon in Willamina and Sheridan. 1997 - Jackie Provost, Emma Leno and Miranda Provost represent ed the Tribe while riding on the Grand Ronde TribeSpirit Mountain Casino float in the Grand Floral Parade in Portland. The Tribe's float won the Sweepstakes Award, the judges' top prize. The theme of the Rose Festival was "Having Fun," and the Tribe's float showed a bobcat playing with a butterfly and was entitled "Mountain Joy." 1992 - Publications does not have a copy of the June issue in 1992. 1987 - The Willamina High School baseball team went 28-2 as six of the 14 players were Grand Ronde Tribal members. Tribal member Doug Colton hit .586 at the plate with nine home runs and on the mound struck out 135 batters in 62 innings and compiled a 0.22 earned run average. He pitched four no-hitters. In addition, Tribal members Jim Bruckner hit .470 and catcher Mike Colton hit .456. Yesteryears is a look back at Tribal history in five-year incre ments through the pages of Smoke Signals. Outdoor Family Movie Night set for June 1 5 An Outdoor Family Movie Night will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 15, at the fire pit at Tilixam Circle. A dinner of Taco del Mar will be served and the movie "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" will follow. There also will be door prizes. Bring your own chair or blanket.
