Smoke Signals
2007 - The old Porter House, built in the 1920s, was torn down to
make way for the new Elders' Activity Center. The building served
as a home, the Tribe's alcohol and drug rehabilitation center, as an
Alcoholics Anonymous meeting hall and as an office for the construc
tion crew building adult foster care homes.
2002 - Ron Karten, a longtime freelance writer, was hired as the new
staff writer at Smoke Signals. In addition, Smoke Signals purchased
new newspaper dispensing machines that were located in Grand Ronde
and Salem, and will be located soon in Willamina and Sheridan.
1997 - Jackie Provost, Emma Leno and Miranda Provost represent
ed the Tribe while riding on the Grand Ronde TribeSpirit Mountain
Casino float in the Grand Floral Parade in Portland. The Tribe's float
won the Sweepstakes Award, the judges' top prize. The theme of the
Rose Festival was "Having Fun," and the Tribe's float showed a bobcat
playing with a butterfly and was entitled "Mountain Joy."
1992 - Publications does not have a copy of the June issue in
1992.
1987 - The Willamina High School baseball team went 28-2 as six
of the 14 players were Grand Ronde Tribal members. Tribal member
Doug Colton hit .586 at the plate with nine home runs and on the
mound struck out 135 batters in 62 innings and compiled a 0.22 earned
run average. He pitched four no-hitters. In addition, Tribal members
