14 SEPTEMBER 1,2011 Smoke Signals !X3D Dear Smoke Signals: I would like to thank the following Tribal members on behalf of the Tribal inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary and myself for their donation of salmon: Duke Kimsey, Marcus Gibbons, Mike Larsen, Jeff Larsen, Daniel Freeman, Amanda Freeman, Sean Freeman, Sydney West, Winston Mercier, Bill Lafferty, Phoenix Walker, Ferrell DeGarmo, Royal Freeman, Shawna Freeman, Anthony Sabin, Robert Mercier, Lewis S. Younger, Christopher Freeman, Kenneth E. Lafferty, Leslie Freeman and T.J. Grefsrud. These members generously donated their distribution salmon to supply the annual OSP powwow with a wonderful meal. The powwow was a great success and had a large turnout. Also, I would like to thank the Natural Resources staff for donating 10 pounds of elk meat and also their efforts in organizing the pick-up of the salmon. D Zumba held Monday, Wednesday in gym Zumba, an easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired and calorie-burning dance fitness party, is held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday in the Tribal gymnasium. D Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Tribal Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program Wawa pus tenas "Speaking for ChildrenYouth" Each year, approximately 780,000 children in the U.S. are caught in the court and child welfare maze because they are unable to live safely at home. Approximately 13,965 children in the state of Oregon have been in foster care at least once during the past year. Currently, there are approximately 87 Grand Ronde children in foster care. Half of those children are wards of the Tribal Court right here in the Grand Ronde Community. The Grand Ronde Tribal Court is looking for committed, caring volun teers who want to help these children by advocating for the child. The Tribal Court CASA Program will train all volunteer advocates. Give these children a voice during this difficult time, help these children to receive the services they need, stay connected to their culture and find safe permanent homes. Aprovecho has operated a sustainable living community and school for the past 30 years; for more information about them visit their Web site at www.aprovecho.net Some of the courses Aprovecho offers are: Permaculture Design Certifica tion, sustainable living skills, plant propagation, forest gardening, natural building materials and water harvesting. The Culture Committee is planning to put together training in partner ship with Aprovecho.
