Smoke Signals 15 AUGUST 1,2010 Wildlife Society program for Natives The Professional Development Program for Native American Students Interested in the Wildlife Profession is open to all Na tive American, Alaska Natives, First Nations, Native Hawaiian or Indigenous Tribal students currently enrolled in an undergradu ate or graduate program studying natural resources or natural resource management. This competitive program will provide travel grant funds to en able students to attend the 17th annual Conference of the Wildlife Society to be held in Snowbird, Utah, Oct. 2-6, 2010. Selected individuals will receive $1,500 each to help cover regis tration fees, lodging, meals and transportation to the conference. In addition, program participants will receive one-year TWS and NPWMWG memberships, TWS publications including The Wildlife Professional and The Wildlifer as well as discounts on The Journal of Wildlife Management and access to TWS online resources. Chinuk Immersion Kindergarten program The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde has its own Chinuk Immersion Kindergarten program. Students attend Willamina Elementary in the morning from 8 -1 1:30 a.m. at which time they are bused out to the Grand Ronde Preschool. The Chinuk Kin dergarten class runs from noon to 3:30 p.m. at which time they will need to be picked up or join the K-5 program. The courses that the children miss in the afternoons in Willamina are mainly PE, library and music, but we are able to provide those classes for them. The children learn the Native language of the area and they are exposed to the local culture. The children are able to experience many hands-on units about their surrounding area. They are able to enjoy smaller class sizes and much teacher in teraction. We are still taking applications for the upcoming school year. The MERIT Program offers Training Advising Mentoring 2010-11 afterschool program now enrolling Kindergarten through 5th Grade 2010-11 Afterschool Program for Tribal and Native American Youth Applications for incoming K-5 students interested in participating in the 2010-1 1 afterschool program can now be picked up at the Youth Education Building. Completed applications will be accepted at Youth Education on Mon day Aug. 2 at 8 a.m. through Wednesday, Aug. 1 1 at 5 p.m. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. A checklist of required documenta tion that needs to be included with the completed application will be attached to the application form. Eligibility requirements, as stated through the Child Care Develop ment Fund Grant, states that parent(s)guardian(s) must be in school, working or in a training program during operational hours for a youth to participate. The program will begin on Monday, Aug. 30. Space is limited. A waiting list will be created for those applicants that are not awarded one of the few open spaces. The program is open to Tribal, descendent and Native American students, with a preference given to enrolled CTGR youth.
