Tribal employee wins photo contest Tribal Lead Health Information Technician Lillian Engel took first place in the Tribal Library's "Get Caught Reading" photo contest while Tribal member Candi Buswell took second and third places. Engel's "Baby With a Book" finished first and Buswell's two photos, Two Kids Interrupted" and Two Kids Reading," took second and third, respectively. There were 15 photos entered in the contest and they were judged on compliance to theme, emotional impact, artistry and technical detail. This was a fun project for the library to sponsor," said Tribal Elder and Tribal Librarian Marion Mercier. "People who came in the library enjoyed looking at the photos and picking out their favorite." D Benefit to aid Sioux Tribe A benefit at Chemeketa Community College, 4000 Lancaster Drive N.E., Salem from 1 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 3, in the Bookstore Quad will benefit the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, which experienced devastating winter storms that displaced families from their homes on the reservation and neighboring communities. The event is being put on by the Northwest Natives Club and Multi-. cultural Student Services. Suggested donation will be $5. Food will be provided by the Student Retention & College Life and raffle items were ,; donated by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. "' There also will be performances by Native American musicians, singers and folk dancers from the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Con federated Tribes of Siletz, and a performance by nationally known Native American actor and musician Litefoot ("Indian in the Cupboard"). Distribution date: June 1 1, 2010 The amount had not been determined yet. B 2005 Tribal Chairwoman Cheryle A Kennedy and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Supervisor Kemper McMaster signed the Nelson's Checker-mallow Management Plan and Conservation Agreement, which allowed the Tribe to manage the threatened plant on Tribal lands without consulting with the federal agency. 2000 A growing Tribal population required a new expansion of the Tribal Pharmacy. Before the expansion, prescriptions were limited to 200 a day and now the Pharmacy can process up to 600 prescriptions a day. 1995 Tribal Council member Leon "Chip" Tom and Tribal preschool children planted a fir tree at the Head Start building in memory of the daycare children who were killed in the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City. 1990 Gubernatorial candidates Barbara Roberts and Dave Frohn mayer met with representatives of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde at the Chumaree Hotel in Salem. 1985 The Tribe was conducting a fundraising effort with an Indian taco and fry bread stand at Phil Sheridan Days in Sheridan to help pay for the first annual powwow to be held Aug. 10-11 at Grand Ronde Elementary School. .
