4 AUGUST 1,2009 3MOKE SIGNALS 2004 Grand Ronde Tribal member Bobby Mercier led a private ceremony for Grand Ronde Tribal members visiting the Willamette meteorite Tomanowas at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. The museum has 25,000 Native American items in its current collection. 1999 Jesse Jackson Jr. and Vice President Al Gore attended the 1999 Unity Journalist of Color Conference held in Seattle, Wash. When asked about his views on Native people, Gore said, "The United States should relate to Native Americans as sovereigns to sovereigns." 1994 Grand Ronde Tribal member Rosetta Manangan and five other Oregon Native American women were invited by first lady Hill ary Rodham Clinton to be a part on the Pioneer Courthouse Square rally that kicked off President Bill Clinton's proposed health care reforms. 1989 Tribal members Gene Hudson, Marion Forster and Zelda Lane enjoyed the sights on their Reservation tour provided by the Social Services Department. Tribal member Joann McClary from the Social Services Department guided their tour through the reservation timberlands. Tribal Elder Harold Blair and Tribal Council member Ray McKnight along with Tribal member Merle Leno also enjoyed the sightseeing but not as much as the good food and good company. 1984 The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde considered estab lishing a food distribution program (commodities) through the Siletz Tribe within a six-county service area.
