"I have several ideas for the clin ic," Nunley, 28, says. "There is such a potential for growth here. We could have more physical therapy, rehabilitation, an exercise classes. It is my hope to be able to teach patients how to help themselves. I believe the secret to wellness is active care." Nunley is a 1999 Sutherlin High School graduate. "I became interested in chiro practic medicine as a junior in high school." Nunley says. "I re ally enjoy the hands-on part of the practice. Playing basketball gave me the opportunity to experience the other side of chiropractic treat ment. I spent a lot of time having my ankles taped and sore muscles massaged." After high school, Nunley con tacted April Campbell for guidance about continuing her education. Campbell, now manager of the Tribal Education Division, at the time was working with the Higher Education program. Nunley spent the next four years attending Southern Oregon Univer sity in Ashland, where she earned her bachelor's degree. She then attended Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, where she earned her Doctorate of Chiropractic degree. The group was on campus to get a better grasp of the Tribe's history and ongoing development and to see how they can better serve their Native students. Nunley completed her board exams and Oregon boards in December as well. She is now a state-licensed Doctor of Chi ropractic. "Dr. Kenneth Kelley, the Tribe's current chiropractor, has done an excellent job establish ing the need for chiropractic care here at the Tribe." Nunley says. "Dr. Kelley is my mentor." Kelley has been a chiroprac tor for 31 years and has worked at the Tribal clinic for the past eight years, Nunley says. "Dr. Kelley has an active practice in Sheridan, as well," she says. "He is looking for ward to retirement in the near future and believes that a Tribal member should be the one to take his place at the Grand Ronde clinic. I would like to be the one." Nunley says she has a lot to give back to the Tribe. 'The education expense alone was around $200,000 with grants and scholarships. The Tribe paid for 50 percent of the cost," she says. "If it were not for the Tribe and all the support they have given me, I would not be where I am today." Nunley says that she thinks that many people have no idea how help ful chiropractic medical treatment can be. "They do realize how much pain they are in, or that they are not mov ing quite right. At least not until it is pointed out to them," Nunley says. "We are able to do adjustments, massages, physical therapy, range of motion and evaluations. We are here for our Tribal members. We can assess, diagnose and provide treat ment for a variety of conditions." The Chiropractic Clinic will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays be ginning March 17.
