Marce & Sharon Norwest Roll 212 Dear Smoke Signals: "On June 10, 1839, Father Francois Norbert Blanchet established by blessing a plot of ground 33 paces on the front and 25 paces depth, sur rounded by an enclosure of upright stakes, having in the center a large consecrated cross, to serve, the said ground, for burials and to be the cemetery of the Catholic Mission of St. Paul of the Walamette." Pages 42 and 43 of the Catholic Church records of the Pacific Northwest, Van couver Vols. 1 & II, Stellamaris Mission, Warner and Munnick, French Prairie Press, 1972. Many of the ancestors of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are buried in the St. Paul, Ore., cemetery. As we are observing the 150th year of the establishment of Oregon becoming a state, let us also remember the people who came before statehood and were already here watching history unfold. There is a large white cross in the center of the St. Paul Cemetery.
