Roll 212
Dear Smoke Signals:
"On June 10, 1839, Father Francois Norbert Blanchet established by
blessing a plot of ground 33 paces on the front and 25 paces depth, sur
rounded by an enclosure of upright stakes, having in the center a large
consecrated cross, to serve, the said ground, for burials and to be the
cemetery of the Catholic Mission of St. Paul of the Walamette." Pages
42 and 43 of the Catholic Church records of the Pacific Northwest, Van
couver Vols. 1 & II, Stellamaris Mission, Warner and Munnick, French
Prairie Press, 1972.
Many of the ancestors of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are
buried in the St. Paul, Ore., cemetery. As we are observing the 150th year
of the establishment of Oregon becoming a state, let us also remember
the people who came before statehood and were already here watching
history unfold.
There is a large white cross in the center of the St. Paul Cemetery.

Correction: The name of a bear mentioned in Tribal member res
cues teddy bears" in the Feb. 15 Smoke Signals was incorrect. ALS,
the name of one bear, stands for Advanced Life Support, as provided
by Metro West Ambulance. In addition, the secondary photo was
taken by Veronica Gaston. And, as additional information, MAC,
the name of another bear, represented McMinnville Police Depart
ment, and the bear named Sparky represented the McMinnville Fire
Department. Smoke Signals regrets the errors and omissions.
