Ballots must be returned by 5 p.m. Sept. 5. Tribal Council nominations were completed on June 29 and Tribal Council candidate statements will appear in a special Tilixum Wawa to be mailed in July. See the next issue of Smoke Signals for a roundup of who is running for three open Tribal Council seats in the election. Tribal Council candidates have until 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, to submit their campaign statements for a special edition Tilixum Wawa to be mailed out to the Tribal membership the week of July 21. Candidates have a 600-word limit on their statements. Statements can be submitted by mail to the Publications Department at 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde, OR 97347; by fax to 503-879-2173; or by e-mail to newsgrandronde.org. If faxing your statement, please call Publications Coordinator Dean Rhodes at 503-879-1463 to confirm receipt. Candidates also have until July 16 to either submit a portrait or arrange with Tribal photojournalist Michelle Alaimo to sit for a portrait in the Tribal Governance Center. Campaign statements and photos will not be accepted after 5 p.m. July 16. a Potlatch Fund seeks applicants The Potlatch Fund is seeking applicants for its 2008 Native Arts Granting Cycle, which offers grants from $500 to $5,000 to benefit Native arts and cultures in the Northwest. Arts and culture projects must be active during the granting period of Oc tober 2008 through September 2009. The Native Arts grants are designed for individual Native artists for their projects or for Native organizations for arts projects. Projects must promote, reflect and be rooted in traditional Native arts and cultures in the Northwest and can include, but are not limited to, wood carv ing, painting, dancing, storytelling, writing, photography, printmaking, songs, beading and basket weaving. Native Americans who live in Washington, Oregon, Idaho or Montana can apply, as well as Native American organizations in those four states. Veterans Powwow set for July 11-13 The Grand Ronde Annual Veterans Powwow will be held July 11-13 at the new Tribal Powwow Grounds near Fort Yamhill State Park on the east side of Oregon 22, one mile north of Highway 18. The powwow begins 7 p.m. Friday, July 11, with grand entry. Saturday's events start at noon and 6 p.m. with grand entries and Sunday's grand entry is slated for noon. Wocus Bay is the host drum and Nick Sixkiller and Tribal Elder Bob Tom will be the masters of ceremony. In addition, Victory Fry will be the Whipman, Gilbert Towner the Head Man Dancer and Jhanna Fry the Head Woman Dancer. All veterans and the general public are welcome, as well as all drums and dancers. The event will be alcohol- and drug-free, and political campaigning is not allowed. In addition, display of protect species products or pipestones is prohibited.
